I was hoping that the release date for this phone would prompt Sprint to open up 4G to more markets....And they did. I didn't check at home this morning (downtown Ft Lauderdale) since I was in a rush to get to work, but I'm definitely connected up in Delray Beach. Is this just a random occurrence? Test related? Or is this FINALLY the day?!

4G coverage coming faster than expected

Not random. I live in DC which is also not supposed to have coverage. The guy from a local Sprint store told me they have a 4G tower nearby for testing that would probably get me a signal. He said each tower covers 80 miles (seems like a lot but I have no reason to not believe him). He also said all "6 DC towers" were likely to be turned on by September. So if you're getting a 4G signal from a test tower, it's likely your area could receive official 4G coverage soon.

BTW, he also told me the $10/month fee was to pay Clearwire for their 4G towers since Sprint doesn't own them outright. I had not heard this specific reason for the extra fee before, but it makes sense.

the coverage is really spotty. no bars pretty much. perhaps it will be stronger in fort lauderdale (hopefully!!!!).

I live near Reading, PA and I get a great 4G signal about 1 mile from home. I just need them to increase that range a little bit so I can get it at home. The 4G is fast as hell but kills my EVO's battery fast.
