epic 4g android 2.2, and a noob question

So i havent bought a phone in about 3 years, im still using my iphone 2g. I've made up my mind and i'm getting an epic 4g either saturday (today) or sometime in the upcoming week.

My question is likely pretty dense but, when Epic 4g gets the android 2.2 update, it isn't the kind of thing where it's only on newly purchased phones, correct?

Like, if i purchase epic 4g tomorrow, i'll be able to update my phone from 2.1 to 2.2 via download-update when it releases, right?

According to Sprint and Samung all Epic 4G phones will get a free update to 2.2 (Froyo). When is another question. I understand international Galaxy S phones will get it Sept.

My issue is that I can't get dg27. I'm stuck on dg17 and it won't update.
