Epic stops working, but keyboard is backlit

I've had this random issue for months. I originally thought that I was hitting the power button while the phone was in my pocket, but the last handful of times it has happened while the phone is sitting on my desk or nightstand.

I try to wake up the phone and the screen is completely blank. I can slide open the keyboard and the keys are backlit, so the phone really isn't off. I know that it is not because the battery is dropping to a low level, because it happened this morning with my battery at 100%. The only way "fix" the phone is by removing the battery and turning it back on.

This is a huge problem, because I never know when my phone is going to "turn off" and I miss an alarm or call. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? I am running a completely stock Epic.

Have you tried a factory reset? See if this could be a software related issue but I'm really thinking its hardware related.

I'd hope it would be a software issue, but I agree with Paul on this one it sounds more like hardware to me. Is there an app you've downloaded that you've noticed considerable force closes or everything working fine? I know that can be a hard one to try and piece together if it were a single app, but it could be as simple as removing it, which the factory reset will definitely do. I just hope your not using some sort of task killer, one of the best parts of my epic is the built in Program Monitor widget that only kills programs that are safe to close.

I'm not using a 3rd party task killer, so that's not the problem and I cannot associate the issue with a particular app. I agree that it sounds more like a hardware issue, but that doesn't make me happy after moving to the Epic from a Palm Pre a year ago.

I did have to perform a factory reset for other reasons after getting Froyo was pushed, and the problem still persists. It is quite frustrating because I can go weeks without the problem occurring, but then it happens.

I swear my wife thought I was full of **** when I told her I was not getting her texts, but it finally happened when she was with me one day. The worst thing about this is that I feel like I have to continually look at my phone to make sure that it is working.

I would take it into your local Sprint repair shop and tell them your problem, at least demand a refurb as you can't be taking chances on missing calls or other issues due to a hardware issue that tends to rear its ugly head from time to time.
