im on att got the update wanted to erase the cache partition for the hell of it but now cant get in there I can get to when I can select recovery ( power off volume down thing and power back up) but when u select recovery cant get into the guts menu and select from sd card etc. clear partion cache stuff like that....really the phone is paid for and its mine locked it down tighter than it was before....or am I doing something wrong?

maybe its a marshmallow thing and tightening things up but I used to be able to get in there and clear the cache after an update didn't play around with the other options to much

I got into recovery quite easily. Powered off, then hit volume down and power to get to the bootloader, selected recovery with power and got recovery and all the options. Can you post a screenshot of what you see?

Here are mine:

Volume down = download.

Volume up = recovery.

Just link down to down and you'll remember it.

For Samsung devices, yes. My Nexus and M8 I have to go through the bootloader to get to recovery.
