How can I make my Alexa routine run faster?

I created an Alexa routine with about 6–7 steps. After almost every step, Alexa makes some kind of spoken announcement or confirmation before moving to the next action, which makes the whole routine take much longer than expected.

For example, when I say “Alexa, I am awake,” I want a couple of motion-detection routines disabled immediately so I can walk into those rooms right away. Instead, the delays in the routine slow everything down.

Is there a way to make routines execute faster and more silently? Can I disable Alexa speaking between steps?

I don't use Alexa but I asked Google and this is what it said.

Yes, you can significantly speed up Alexa routines and make them more silent by eliminating spoken confirmations and using specific settings designed for faster execution.
Here are the best ways to optimize your 6–7 step routine:

1. Enable "Brief Mode"
This is the most effective way to stop Alexa from saying "OK" or "Got it" after every step.

  • Go to the Alexa App > More > Settings > Voice Responses.
  • Turn Brief Mode on.
  • Alexa will replace spoken confirmations with a short, subtle chime.

2. Check "From" Device Setting
If your routine is triggered by voice ("Alexa, I'm awake"), she may be responding from the echo nearest to you.

  • Within the Routine editor, check the "From" option.
  • If set to "The device you speak to," she may confirm actions locally.
  • If it is a routine that doesn't need to speak, setting it to a specific device, or ensuring no "Alexa Says" actions are included, can help.

3. Use "Wait" Actions to Bundle Commands
If Alexa is still chatty, you can force her to bypass the intermediate steps by removing any actions that require her to speak (like "Alexa Says"). If you need a pause between actions rather than a conversation, use the Wait command to keep it silent.

4. Delete and Re-define the Routine
As reported by some users, Alexa routines can sometimes "get stuck" with verbal confirmations. If you have enabled Brief Mode and it is still speaking:

  • Delete the entire routine.
  • Create it from scratch. This often clears out old "verbal confirmation" bugs, especially with recent updates.

5. Check "Alexa+" (If Applicable)
If you are using the "Alexa+" feature (an enhanced AI version), it has been known to be more chatty ("OK," "Got it") compared to standard Alexa. Discontinuing the use of Alexa+ for that specific routine can revert it to a faster, quieter operation.

6. Use "Custom" Action to Force Silence
If you have a persistent final "OK," you can add a final step in the routine:

  • Add Action > Custom > type "set volume to 0" or "stop".
  • This can stifle the final confirmation.
I get your frustration with the lengthy respond and reply thing. This was my hesitation in adopting Gemini. Holy crap it talks a lot. I don't need a confirmation for every little thing I say. Oh and don't get me started on over explaining every little thing. OK, Google, Mississippi. The Mississippi river travels through and around 10 states starting in... Yeah I just wanted to know how to spell the word not get the history of everything I search.

Anyway, good luck. Let us know if this works for you.
