Eris 2.1 Changes/Findings

An update to my findings:

Phone is a piece of crap sometimes at being....well...a phone. I try to make calls, nothing happens, get calls...can't hear the person. Have to power cycle the phone to fix it. GARBAGE. Anyone have a fix for this? Also a fix for how it takes forever to send a SMS message now?

I am missing my Amazon mp3

I didn't use it a lot but I liked having it. Now it's just gone. Yesterday I saw it when I long pressed the home button even though I had not used it in a while. Then later I went to use it to look up a song and it was gone. I thought it had something to do with the update so I went to download it again and it was not in the marketplace! Does anyone know of a good replacement app?

Just a QR.

My family all has the Eris, 4 of them. Mine was reset to factory before the update, I have zero issues from the update. My father's phone worked fine, he didn't have many apps installed. My mother's phone was like his, but she never synced her contacts with Google and the Update wiped them out. Had to sync her old Razr phone to my Pre+ and sync that with another GMail account then sync to her phone OTA. She's fine now. I'm a regular Pre+ user though, just on the Eris to help the family with the new features and changes.

My sister's phone though has the most issues. She had the force close problems and her ringtones weren't very audible. If you held it up close, you could tell it was trying to make noise, but it had tons of extra noise in the sound. Did a factory reset and now she can't hear or be heard in calls. Her camera won't even work, and other apps are force closing all the time. Her new (refurb'd) Eris will be here this morning. Hope starting from a fresh phone helps her out.

Thank you!! I've been scouring forums for any info on end button behavior. I've got spare parts. I went in and changed from home, then sleep to sleep. It worked like a charm!
It was driving me nutty..

This seems to be a known bug that only some people are having (though it seems to be a rather significant number.) I'd talk to Verizon Wireless and get a replacement under warranty, though watch to see that the replacement doesn't have the same problem.

From what I have read, if you have this problem, it tends to make using the phone almost impossible from lag. The only solution is a shutdown and restart (or battery pull and restart) until the silent audio bug resurfaces next.

Yeah, that's the "Silent Call Bug" that is also discussed in this thread.

http://forum.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?p=115355&posted=1#post115355

The only temporary fix for that is a reboot. Factory Wipes cure most of the other 2.1 blues but the that bug is pretty persistent.

It usually happens after somebody leaves you a VM and the minute you call to your VM to listen to it.

I've also seen it happen when someone calls you while your on another call, and they leave you a VM. Again, once you try to listen to it, it happens.

I've tried to reproduce these conditions but it seems to only happen when it wants. However it does appear to hover around Voicemail.

Here are a few other symptoms of 2.1 if you haven't seen them.

1. The "Silent call" or Phone goes Silent bug - This includes but is not limited to...
a: The phone not ringing when calls come in.
b: The phone lagging when using applications that require sounds for inputs such as the dialer app, volume control etc...
c: When placing a call, it will show you are connected but no sound will com from the earpiece, speaker, or bluetooth.
d: Phone will not go to sleep after setting it down.

[Solution - however temporary, a reboot will kick it back in shape.]

2. The camera resolution isn't as good - I personally have seen this, but I'm not so sure it's the camera itself. I went to my older photos what I had taken with 1.5 and they too look grainy.

[no solutions as of yet]

3. Weather app/widget force closes constantly - I have not experienced this problem but many have.

[solution - I've heard by going to manage applications and clearing the data for the weather app and widget fixes the problem.]

4. Contact ringtones stop working - this was due to still using a Task manager or task killer. The new "people" app that runs in the processes needs to remain running for all of your contact customization to work.

[solution - exclude the People app from the end task list then reboot your phone. Once you ended the people app process once it won't work right unless you reboot. Or remove your task killer and reboot.]

5. Battery life seems to be lower - I've seen this with my Eris, however if I refrain from playing with it most of the day the battery life is about the same as it was before.

[solution - I've seen this narrowed down to apps/widgets that use constant mobile network connectivity to stay updated. Also if you are using a battery widget, removing it will increase your battery life. Ironic hu.]

6. 50% or less signal - this is for everyone across the board. Haven't heard of any fixes however it doesn't seem to have a negative effect.

7. Calendar app force closes - Haven't had this one happen but it seems common.

[no solutions as of yet]

8. Text messages are really slow to send - After sending a text, it usually hangs. I've even had to delete and resend.

[solution - after factory reset, it was fixed.]

So far these are the most common issues I've seen myself and with other people's posts. I will suggest a factory reset once you've updated to 2.1. I had a ton of issues after the update but ALLOT of them were gone after I did the reset.

Hey Dottam22, thanks for the comprehensive list, I'm sure people will find that helpful. I know a factory reset has fixed any issue my wifes phone has had. Also thanks for the heads up guys on the silent call issue. Haven't ran into that one but will keep an eye out.

A replacement from Verizon has a high chance of having the same problem though I would imagine, being the same 2.1. Right?

Since not all Erises are having this problem, it is possible that it is a hardware defect that affected only a subset of handsets.

Yeah it could be as simple as a bios revision on one of the chipsets inside the phone causing it. My wifes phone hasn't had this issue yet.

And from what I've been reading, a factory reset could fix some things, and make some things not work...is this true? I mean I don't want to factory reset if it fixes one thing only to make another thing start being gay.

A factory reset will not break anything. You just have to reset your accounts and resync them. If you do a factory reset within the boot menu, volume down + home button while powering up, it will also erase EVERYTHING.

its nice to have all the new options... but it lags and its slow. it gets hung up while dialing or speed dialing. ugh...

Just a tip some people having problems with the phone not ringing 2.1 has a feature that will auto silence your ringtone when you pick the phone up or if it moves around in your pocket and it auto silences when your phone is face down. Go to Settings > Sounds and display > Quiet ring on pick up and make sure the box is unchecked.

Is it just me, or were we able to receive all Exchange ActiveSync email before this upgrade?!?

I can only get Plain text now, and I don't think this was a problem on 1.5.

Touchdown is not working for me very well either - despite my best efforts to tell it to get all mail, it only syncs mail I have already read. Not helpful.

Any suggestions?

Ok i just got an email from verizon stating the details of the 2.1 update and how to. and it says it has already been sent to my phone. But even after a *228 restart there nothing in my notification bar. so i guess ifyour running the leaked 2.1 it will still pick it up as the new update. Im glad i went with the leaked cuz if today was supposed to be the day i got the update i woulda been p/o.

I got that email this morning, however I updated my wifes phone to 2.1 like two weeks ago lol.

Yeah my wife got an email about my update yesterday and it says I have it but I put it on my phone over a month ago when it got leaked.

Well the silent call bug finally hit the wifes phone. Does anyone know some information on fixing it, or is rebooting the phone the only way to make it work again? If that's the case it's time for an upset customer to get on the horn with Verizon.

So far, the only fix is a shutdown and restart.

If it were me, I would go for a replacement under warranty until I received one that did not have the bug.

My hope is that eventually HTC will find the problem and Verizon will have an OTA patch.
