Erratic Moto G4 dialler

[Android Central Question]

After an idle period, the Nougat dialler gets wonky and associates a tap with the wrong contact and then repeatedly re-dials and does not respond to 'End call' red phone icon. Sometimes uncommanded 9's appear in the number dialed box. Speed dialling does not function.
Using other functions of the phone and turning the display off/on a few times will sometimes clear the problem. Only sure way is to reboot.

Suggestions?
