Has anyone ever heard of this Ryoko thing before and/or how well it works (or doesn't)? https://getryoko.com/
I don't know whether it's for real, some kind of gimmick or ??? It almost seems like one of those "if it sounds too good to be true" kinda things but on the other hand there are so many gidgets and gadgets out there I'm not sure at all.
Seems legit to me. There are plenty of companies that rent portable wi-fi devices for travelers -- in Asia and Europe, I've used companies like Klook and KKDay to rent these kinds of devices for $5-8/day, which I prefer over getting an international plan on my phone, since a portable wi-fi device allows for multiple devices to connect (without having to expend battery on my phone by using a phone hotspot). The main difference with Ryoko is that you purchase the device yourself and can globally roam with it, as long as you're near one of the networks it uses. $40 per month for 10 GB of data isn't too bad, but 10 GB of data can be used up pretty quickly depending on what you do. For comparison, Metro by T Mobile offers a portable wi-fi plan that's $30 for 10 GB (or $40 for 30 GB), but of course that's limited to the US: https://www.metrobyt-mobile.com/plans/connected-devices
If you travel a lot and don't want to keep renting a hotspot every time, this might make sense.
