Essential Developer link announced with NMI81C kernel available

They can't do anything with out having the boot imagine, there is no way to restore the phone if they run into an issue. No custom ROMS until essential releases the images.
Correct, which is why I said it's a great start. Developers can still dig into the kernel/driver source in the meantime.

They have already dug into it over at XDA. They all like it, but they are at a stand still till they get a recovery imagine. I am curious as to how much will be done in the custom rom scene with this phone. I don't know how you would make this phone better. Rooting now breaks safety net, which disables android pay and breaks a lot of banking apps. There is magisk, which tricks safety net but Google has been good at killing magisk.

The ROM scene is turning towards the jailbreak, due to everything is getting harder to do, alot of the features people want from ROM's are already incorporated into android.

Agreed on all points. I can't root mine since it both violates MDM policy and breaks all of my secure apps. With Oreo around the corner, custom ROMs might not be all that important anyway. XDA seems to be pretty happy about it either way.

I'm just glad to see developer support happen within the first two months of launch. It shows the company is supporting the user base, even if things are taking a bit more time than expected.
