anyone who says differently does not know what they are talking about...
You can add me to the does not know what he is talking about crowd.

It's total complete crap. VERY slow. Tedious to use. Bad in slightly low or low light. Constantly freezes or crashes. It pales in comparison to my iPhone 6S+'s camera, which is 3+ year old technology.
The only other camera from a newer expensive phone that is close to being this bad is on the Mi Mix2. My wife has that phone and the camera is terrible.
We are always sticking my old iPhone in her purse so she can take reliable photos. I am not going to pull hairs to make the Essential Camera what it is not and it is not a good camera in any way. Yeah, it's the phone I use and I like it a lot. But good grief, the PH-2 had better nail the camera in every way or I want no part in it.
Lol while I totally agree with the camera complaints (my 6P absolutely smokes the PH-1's camera also), the random freezing and crashing while taking a picture seems to be fixed in 8.1... at least it hasn't happened to me yet in the week I've had it installed.
The last camera update (about 2 weeks ago?) seems to have fixed most of the camera issues, at least for most that I've talked to. It seems to have eliminated the lag, freezing, etc. I've had no issue with my camera since the last update (and did have issues prior) though that was mostly taking several pictures (a dozen or so) in a single session and playing a bit with the 360 camera.
False
How cool would it be if it was similar to this concept, but with the motorized camera also being a 360 camera.

There is a much easier solution to this problem. Just eliminate the front facing camera altogether. Surprised no one thought of it yet. Oh that's right...a selfie camera is an absolute necessity. Lol.Apparently Essential owns a patent for the pop up camera, it is something Essential looked at and developed before deciding on a camera notch. It appears that Vivo may need to pay Essential royalties if they bring that phone to market.
I'm sure many wouldn't consider buying a phone that didn't have a selfie cam. Moving it to the bottom with a slim bezel might be the best option. The rest of the phone could be nearly bezel-less without having to use a pop up cam that might interfere with water resistance. There is a much easier solution to this problem. Personally I'd take a large uninterrupted screen with a clean thin bezel over a useless selfie camera any day.
Pop up is definitely a bad idea for practical reasons, I won't argue with that. However I do like like the privacy aspect of having it completely concealed when I'm not using it...which is 99.99% of the time.I'm sure many wouldn't consider buying a phone that didn't have a selfie cam. I don't get the camera hate on this phone. I've had it for a few days and have been very impressed. compared to my old g6, this thing is super fast!
Essential has updated the camera app numerous times, and one released just last month seems to finally be working. As for those still complaining, some I think are trolls, who hated the camera when it was released (with good reason) and are still taking out their frustrations on this forum (despite having gotten rid of their phones months ago). It does seem like others may legitimately still have issues, I'm guessing from some type of data corruption/bad settings in the camera app -- possibly in some cases because of things they tried to "fix" the camera back when the app had issues.
Thank you for your extremely crass insult. I have the phone with the latest camera update and that made it worse. It constantly lags or freezes. It is completely incapable of taking a picture in a hurry. When editing pictures the app often freezes. Without a lot of light pics turn out blurry or noisy. It's just pathetic.
My opinion is perfectly valid and anyone who doesn't like can shove it. I use this phone daily and like a lot about it. A hell of a lot. But the camera is a huge failure. I still carry my iPhone 6S+ at night if I am going somewhere with my lady because she want good pictures and the Essential Phone has constantly failed to deliver while the 3+ year old iPhone has never failed.
