Essential Phone 2!

I don't think it's garbage.
It works.
Is it the iPhoneX camera, no, but that does make it garbage.

I can take usable pictures.

It's total complete crap. VERY slow. Tedious to use. Bad in slightly low or low light. Constantly freezes or crashes. It pales in comparison to my iPhone 6S+'s camera, which is 3+ year old technology.

The only other camera from a newer expensive phone that is close to being this bad is on the Mi Mix2. My wife has that phone and the camera is terrible.

We are always sticking my old iPhone in her purse so she can take reliable photos. I am not going to pull hairs to make the Essential Camera what it is not and it is not a good camera in any way. Yeah, it's the phone I use and I like it a lot. But good grief, the PH-2 had better nail the camera in every way or I want no part in it.

spoken like someone who his true to the facts and not fiction.
I agree with everything you have said!

and oh by the way. totally forgot the camera app's latest feature! a green blank instead of a photo. happened to me twice already. here it is in all its glory! (needless to say I did not take a picture of a green rectangle. I tried to take a photo of a beautiful dish in a restaurant with auto HDR on)

Lol while I totally agree with the camera complaints (my 6P absolutely smokes the PH-1's camera also), the random freezing and crashing while taking a picture seems to be fixed in 8.1... at least it hasn't happened to me yet in the week I've had it installed.

The last camera update (about 2 weeks ago?) seems to have fixed most of the camera issues, at least for most that I've talked to. It seems to have eliminated the lag, freezing, etc. I've had no issue with my camera since the last update (and did have issues prior) though that was mostly taking several pictures (a dozen or so) in a single session and playing a bit with the 360 camera.

False

Yes you've already stated your displeasure with the camera in several redundant posts. Time to find something else to do instead of starting to claim that people are now lying about the experiences they're having

Apparently Essential owns a patent for the pop up camera, it is something Essential looked at and developed before deciding on a camera notch. It appears that Vivo may need to pay Essential royalties if they bring that phone to market.
There is a much easier solution to this problem. Just eliminate the front facing camera altogether. Surprised no one thought of it yet. Oh that's right...a selfie camera is an absolute necessity. Lol.

Personally I'd take a large uninterrupted screen with a clean thin bezel over a useless selfie camera any day.

I'm sure many wouldn't consider buying a phone that didn't have a selfie cam. Moving it to the bottom with a slim bezel might be the best option. The rest of the phone could be nearly bezel-less without having to use a pop up cam that might interfere with water resistance.

Pop up is definitely a bad idea for practical reasons, I won't argue with that. However I do like like the privacy aspect of having it completely concealed when I'm not using it...which is 99.99% of the time.

I don't get the camera hate on this phone. I've had it for a few days and have been very impressed. compared to my old g6, this thing is super fast!

The camera when the phone was first released was horrendous. The camera app tended to freeze, took bad pictures, and did it slowly. Additionally, the camera app would sometimes "time out" and you'd end up with a picture that was just green. In fact, many (if not most) side loaded Google's camera app for the Nexus/Pixel phones to be able to take decent pictures.

Essential has updated the camera app numerous times, and one released just last month seems to finally be working. As for those still complaining, some I think are trolls, who hated the camera when it was released (with good reason) and are still taking out their frustrations on this forum (despite having gotten rid of their phones months ago). It does seem like others may legitimately still have issues, I'm guessing from some type of data corruption/bad settings in the camera app -- possibly in some cases because of things they tried to "fix" the camera back when the app had issues.

Wouldn't mind a small corner notch like on the Xuaomi Mi Mix 2S.

Thank you for your extremely crass insult. I have the phone with the latest camera update and that made it worse. It constantly lags or freezes. It is completely incapable of taking a picture in a hurry. When editing pictures the app often freezes. Without a lot of light pics turn out blurry or noisy. It's just pathetic.

My opinion is perfectly valid and anyone who doesn't like can shove it. I use this phone daily and like a lot about it. A hell of a lot. But the camera is a huge failure. I still carry my iPhone 6S+ at night if I am going somewhere with my lady because she want good pictures and the Essential Phone has constantly failed to deliver while the 3+ year old iPhone has never failed.

Still trying to figure out how the comment was "crass". You, apparently, are one of the ones who still has legitimate issues with your camera, not one of the trolls who got rid of their phone months ago. That was not directed at you.

If you notice, I didn't say that everyone was a troll that complains about the camera; not sure why you feel you were included. I do suspect there is either a software or hardware issue with your camera -- again, most that I've heard from are not having issues with the camera now. Perhaps you disagree, but there do seem to be a few here who are trolling the forum, badmouthing anything and everything about the Essential phone.

I do find it interesting you are having issues editing the software; from what I can tell, the Essential camera app merely links to Google Photos and you are editing the pictures from the Google Photos app. So, any issue you are having editing photos is likely an issue with the Google app -- which again points to some type of issue with the software on your phone.
