it's actually more dependent on the "will it make me queasy" factor. I love the fact the 3DS has an adjustable slider on it. It looks good to me on some things at minimal, and apparently for other games, max is best. But Pilotwings made me want to close my eyes at max.
That's a perfectly valid concern. There are a lot of ways to do 3D wrong, and a lot more study needs to go into how objects can be placed in the 3D field to make sure they don't upset people. This part will get better with time
Not really. . ..
I doubt it will ever be necessary by any means.
Yes its a cool feature, but sending 3D pics to people wont work unless they have a 3D compliant device of some sorts. posting 3D vids wont work for people unless they have 3D compliant equipment to view it.
So basically the 3D will be to show people how cool your phone is and much cooler than theirs because they dont have it. I doubt anyone here will be taking all of their pictures in videos in 3D.
Some games in 3D will be cool, but again it wont be the standard by any means.
I dont see 3D catching on and being an industry standard for anything really causing everyone to have 3D compliant devices in their household. It will be a "cool thing to have" though.
I think you may have missed my point. Color television/movies were never necessary either. Just a cool feature. If you bought a color TV, you just did it so you could say you had a better TV than everyone else. Same with having a touch screen on a phone. It was a silly worthless feature that was just a gimmick (that turned out to be very valuable). Then there was the HDTV revolution that was just a gimmick to get people to buy TVs again.
I'll admit that the 3D necessity was somewhat invented by manufacturers, but it's still the way display technology is going. TVs have nowhere else to go. We don't need higher resolution since our eyes can't even resolve the pixels at this distance anyway, and we don't need much bigger screens since they won't fit into our living rooms (and they're approaching projector screen sizes as it is). So 3D it is.
You can call it a gimmick if you want, and you can say it's pointless and worthless, but it is advancing technology, and that's fine by me. I'll be sitting here enjoying my 3D movies and video games, and you can do whatever makes you happy. We'll both go on living. I'll just be satisfied knowing that I'm playing with the beginnings of a technological leap in display technologies.
Clarification: The point is that it isn't necessary now, but it is the next advancement in display tech and will be important some day. People will look at you and say "Your TV isn't in 3D?!" Just like you would look at someone and say "Your TV isn't in color?!"
