Can't wait to get my hands on one of these devices, but cannot find one in any store.

Anyone using the paid version of this? I know the initial release was free. Anyone on the free version still?

The other thing I heard was the hotspot destroys the battery in less than an hour. Is this true?

Unless you really need to connect multiple devices, just run the free Unrevoked program to set up a SuperUser account, and then run the free Wireless Tether program to enable WiFi tethering.

Will tethering kill your battery? I think the answer is it depends on how much data you're passing across the link. The more data, the more battery use. But if you're tethering, you've obviously got a computer, so just plug in the USB cable and run the phone off the laptop's power.

I have the paid version currently as I am in the testing process still. I like it - quick to setup, devices connect flawlessly and it seems pretty fast. As for battery life, as meyerweb said it all depends on how much data you use etc. Mine lasts a few hours without having to plug back in to charge.

I ditched my aircard for this hotspot phone feature for less money every month. And its always in the charger when I use it.

That's kind of what I am thinking too.

Are you on the paid $30/mo plan?
Free Sprint plan (unless it's been plugged)?
Or the Rooted plan?

I also have it because i want to get rid of my verizon card so i wanted to check it out. I think the Hotspot feature is awesome and very useful. I really dont know why anyone would use it without charging while using it.

I got a EVO on Friday. Lucky of the draw.

Went ahead and singed up for the $30 Sprint Hotspot option.

To all you EVO users that have the ROOTed phone. Are you able to connect your WiFi hotspot at 4G for wireless tether?

The (paid) Sprint software allows 3G or 4G hotspot action, but does the ROOTed version as well?

Yup :)

Okay maybe it's time for a ROOT, and free wifi hotspot then.. I really like how it works.

I pay for the hotspot feature and my battery seems to hold out... although I'm not streaming videos or music constantly. I think four hours is the longest I've hotspotted on battery (in a 3g area) and still had battery life to go.

What I'm kinda curious about is... how do the people who are stealing the feature via rooting justify it in their minds? I mean, it is theft, how do you rationalize away your criminal act? or do you just accept it and move on?

I'm sure they rationalize it in the same way sprint rationalized charging you an extra 10 a month for a phone that uses no more data than any other phone in the world. They are just getting there moneys worth

I have the paid $30 a month and I like the ability to have multiple devices tethered at once. It lasts a few hours, but if you're on your laptop watching HD youtube, of course it'll drain faster. I mostly use it on my laptop when I'm out and ipad, its one of the best features of the Evo.

Sprint knows that it is easy to tether the Evo without the $30 plan and they expect many high end users to do just that. In addition, they have done (and will do) nothing to prevent it or even make it harder.

The $30 plan is really for users who don't have the technical skills/knowledge to install Wireless Tether. Sprint makes it super easy to do and some people are ok with paying $360/year for that ease of use.

No problems; to each his own!

Sorry, but I don't see how that argument is valid. They tell you about the ten dollar fee when you sign the contract. For the internet sharing it is in the contract that you pay for the feature, you are committing theft when you hack to do it.

So, just trying to understand you here... you're saying that because they don't make it harder to hack the feature, Sprint WANTS you to hack it? Does that mean if I leave my door unlocked that I want my house robbed?

Used it for 5 hours on my iPad yesterday. It worked great. I was using slingplayer, web browser, and a bunch of other apps.

The stock sprint app is still working for free for those of us that AREN'T paying the hotspot fee (for me atleast, I just tested it) so technically they aren't stealing anything YET (or ever, in my opinion).

Also, you are paying to use sprint's app, not wifi tether. If sprint charged us for GPS turn by turn (sprint navigation) on our phone (thank god they don't like all of the other guys) but we decided to use a free app instead (google nav) even if it wasn't quite as good, that is not stealing. My friend has a Droid, he could pay $10 a month for VZW navigator, but instead he uses google nav, he is not stealing gps from verizon.

In my opinion, the hotspot feature is similar, we are not using sprint's app, but one that someone else wrote and decided to give away for free. Sprint could have made the EVO incredibly hard to root (see droid incredible, no pun intended) but they didn't. If you leave your door unlocked, your house is more likely to get robbed and you know this, which is why you lock your door. Sprint closed the door, but didnt lock it, therefore taking the risk of us doing our own thing.
