So, lo and behold I'm sure I'm not the only person with this problem, but I have spent many an hour on trying to solve this problem.

So, upon plugging my HTC EVO 4G into my Windows 7 laptop, it charges. No prompts from my phone, no prompts on my computer. Just charges. I even made sure my phone would ask me, and I ensured USB debugging is on.

It didn't always do this. I don't know what caused it to stop, it just suddenly stopped recognizing.

I tried installing Sync on my laptop, the newest edition mind you, and it didn't help with the recognizing process.

I then checked the Device Manager, and it didn't have anything related to the ADB driver (or phone for that matter) show up.

What could the problem be? Could it be the ADB driver missing that's causing the problem? I am using unrooted Android 2.3.3, and all that other stuff is up to date on my phone.

Much thanks for any time spent trying to solve my problem.

Also, seeing as this is my first post, hi. :D

I have the same problem, though I am sure (at least in my situation) it is from wear and tear on the micro USB connection on the phone... It feels looser and sometimes it even slips and "activates" carmode as well.

Annoying, but if I play with the connection, wiggle, unplug and replug and generally reseat the connection it eventually gets recognized...

Yeah, I've tried messing with it like that, and it hasn't helped. I figure though if it charges, the computer should be able to pick it up too, ya know?

I mean, my EVO is over a year old, and it has faced a good bit of drops and stuff. I don't have a case for it >_>
I'm probably gonna just try to get a replacement because of how beat up it has gotten. The touch screen fails frequently, and I guess the USB connectivity is another thing to add to the problems.

Unless if it is a USB driver issue?

Probably already did this but if not then reboot your laptop. If that doesn't work i would do a factory reset on the evo.

EVO-LUTION 3D

I had the same thing happen with my 3d. It turned out to be the USB cable, used a different one and it works fine. Switched back to the first and and had the same problem again.

My evo just started doing this too. I verified it wasn't the software by booting into recovery and turning on usb drive and the computer didn't even blink or make that sound that it usually makes when it detects a usb device was plugged in.

Tried 2 different cables and two different computers and same thing. I used ADB Wireless to push the latest unrooted original rom back to the sdcard and flashed it and dropped it off at the sprint store for repair. I hate going to those stores because they treat you like your a dumbass and they were sure not to disappoint me today with the well it's charging and make sure you uncheck charge only dumbass response but then i finally got them to plug into a laptop to prove to me that it was working and *gasp* it didnt work.

So i'll wait until the end of the day and pick it up and report back.

I'm curious what they will do to fix it and also curious if anyone has been to sprint for repair on this issue and if so what they did to fix it? Did the problem go away for good or come back?

Thanks!

Uh:( sounds like we haven't found a solution yet... I'm having the same issue with a motorola Droid 4.

Just got back from sprint store. Looks like they can't figure it out either and they ordered me a replacement phone. :D

Not for nothing, but I have had this happen to me a with a few different phones(always Evo's oddly), and with every single one of them it was the usb port on the Evo that was not working properly. Two times, the phones we replaced the usb port, and both phones were instantly recognized by the computer. (Btw, all of them did still charge the battery, it was only the data side of the usb that is effected, before the entire port connection will eventually break apart inside).

Try pushing down on the phone end of the plug, while its plugged into the phone and the computer. I was having the same problem until i did that and all of a sudden its recognized. However removing the pressure caused it to stop being found. So i got a weight. Hope this helps.

i had this problem a few weeks back as well i would plug in EVO 4G and it would not prompt me on what i wanted to do it went on straight charge pc said it did not recognize usb device etc. I pulled battery for 30 seconds put it back let it do its thing and now it works like a charm. hopefully this helps someone out :D

This sounded the most stupid solution that i have ever heard by far..... but I tried it since noting else worked and what do you know.... it worked. thanks a million.

In my case it was a bad USB cable. It would charge, but the PC wouldn't recognize the phone. A new cable solved my problem.

I figured I would add my two cents worth. I was having this same issue with my EVO not connecting to the computer, but it was charging. It's getting a bit aged, so I figured the USB port was worn out. The one thing I saw that has not been mentioned here is this: When I plugged my USB cable in, the phone would flash on the screen when viewing the file manager on the computer. Not sure how this helpful, but that's what I was seeing.
However, after trying multiple cables with no luck then trying the Settings>Applications>Development>USB Debugging, I still had no luck connecting the phone to the comuter.
Finally, I followed the advice given above. I pulled the battery and put it back in. What a simple solution. As it turns out, all three cables I have dangling from the computer are perfectly good cables and now I can transfer all the photos off my phone as the battery trick fixed it.
Thanks!

Some cheap cables are "charging" cables and do not have the other 2 wires in them or connected. Always try a different USB cable first!

Nice! It worked! Thanks!:D
I just took the battery and the sd card off then waited for about 1 minute and turned it back on! I plugged the usb cable again and worked!

I have been having problems with my phone lately. I dropped my HTC EVO design 4g in the toilet, exposed to water. When i took it out as fast as 2 sec... i pressed down the on button, to see if it was working. Is it bad and will cause more damage?. Because i did a reasearch online, saying that while water contacts with your phone, immediately pull out the SDcard and battery. But i on it it worked then i pulled off the battery. I dried it in rice now its like 2 days passed and my phone will not work at all. When it dropped in water, i tried to insert battery and charge my phone. But i saw the LED light orange and half green. The color was dim. Everytime i insert the battery, the back camera flashes a bright light. Will replacing a new battery help? or any ideas? please help? :(
