Another Pre refugee...
Somehow, I stubbornly stuck with my Pre for 18 months (was able to get full upgrade thanks to Sprint Premier status). Yes, I bought it on launch day. I was about 10th in line, a few behind one of my colleagues. I didn't have nearly the hardware problems some folks had, but I finally had it with the "can't open any more cards" garbage when I didn't have anything running to begin with. It makes me sad, because I still think the OS is amazing, but the hardware was absolute garbage. It was downright painful to try and pull my music, etc. off my old Pre and wipe it. I almost can't bring myself to give it to my wife to replace her Pre (which is in worse shape than mine), even excluding the fact that she is now extremely jealous of me.
Honestly, I pray that HP gets the hardware right because I think the competition will raise everyone's game.
The EVO is amazing, even when I can't get 4G (it's very spotty in my corner of metro Denver). It doesn't feel cheap to me at all. It feels beefy and solid. I think it's because there are no sliding keyboards or anything like that to scare me, plus a functional power button. This phone also does what I ask of it, and does it right away, without griping at me, and I am willing to give up gestures, etc. for that. Snappy response? Actual app support? Sign me up! I was wondering what I would lose, but Android has wildly exceeded my expectations thus far. Even the extended battery I bought isn't a problem. I like how it makes the phone feel in my hands (which are actually quite small).
Seriously, after living with the limitations of the Pre--and being excited about that phone for probably far longer than I should have--I am thrilled to own a phone that is actually worthy of being regarded as a carrier's flagship device (since the Pre was NEVER worthy of that designation, despite half-hearted marketing attempts to convince people otherwise). This phone is what the Pre should have been, bar none.
Your move, HP.
