Evo vs Epic

Hmm, is there any way to check what type of sensor both of the phones use? You can't really pick a winner as I don't think that the Evo's camera is used at it's full potential. I see where he's going with this though. The Epic's pictures look somewhat sharper, but something leads me to believe that the Evo's camera seems more natural.

Anyways, I heard that messing around with settings also helps. If one was to take the manual settings and use them with Vignette, would the quality be even better? I'm tempted to try this, but it is really dark outside

See how changing from florescent to incandescent changes the blueish tint? I've literally taken over 4000 pictures at this point with my Evo. I've never had a problem with a blueish tint unless I have incandescent on

dunno man.. top pic shows more accurate whites.. don't see the strong blue tint that's so obvious in the other examples

However since all of these cameras are relatively poor in low light, I've only really concentrated on their performance in day light..

Just for fun I took these two pics with the Epic under a 100W incandescent bulb.. top one is Auto WB, bottom is Incadescent. Both shot with vignette with no effect applied. This test shows me the Auto WB on the Epic is very accurate.

I played around with the Evo's settings and actually, the pictures turned out pretty good for low light. I'm going to do more tests tomorrow.

Well one of the biggest problems with the Evo is the defaults settings and auto settings aren't that great. Like I've said, I've taken literally thousands of pictures and what I've noticed is you can dramatically increase the picture quality if you mess around with the settings, especially in low light, pics needed with flash, and even very bright conditions. I'm gonna make a post in a few minutes about how my Evo has replaced my point and shoot. it's about 20 pictures of the 400+ that I took while in Puerto Rico.. Check them out if you want. I'm sure the Epic would have taken better ones, but the point we're all trying to make is the camera i the Evo still takes great pictures.

After much research and asking around, the winner is...

My first post here because I just found this place, I had a thread of my own on the crackberry forums asking for opinions on which phone to choose for my Sprint service: EVO or EPIC.

A few key, important points for me were:

• keyboard large enough for me to use without innumerable typos
  
• large display for those of us >40 who have to otherwise use reading glasses
• ease of use insofar as web usage goes

Anyway, I stopped at a Sprint store today and used both phones. I have to say, I really liked the physical keyboard on the EPIC. I liked the fact that the numbers were just as accessible as the letters (on the EVO one has to go to a different screen to access the numbers and characters--a minor inconvenience). I also thought the display was quite nice. More colorful and sharper.

I used the EVO's keyboard in landscape mode more than I did last time I tried this phone, and I have to say, I must have gotten a wee bit more used to it because I didn't experience nearly the same number of typos I did before.

As far as the touch sensitivity/Sense/Touchwiz in general, I really couldn't tell any difference between the two. Nor could I tell the difference in the processors, one being snapdragon one hummingbird. (Both of these phones did have 2.2 on it.)

One thing I did like about the EVO was that, IMHO, navigating its display was a tad easier for me. Granted, its display is only 7.5% larger than the EPIC, but I still had a slightly easier time when I did things like expand web windows. Reading stuff on the screen was a little easier for me on the EVO than it was on the EPIC. I really DO love that big-@ss clock/time on the top of the display.

Lastly, there is available for the EVO a massive larger capacity battery now available. Yes, it's thicker and requires the 1/4" thicker door, but I know a couple people who have this and they swear it actually makes holding the EVO easier and better. On my BB Tour I find this to be true. I can rest my fingers more solidly on the phone as a whole with the extended battery door on it.

So, I suppose deciding between the two is quite literally "six of one, half-dozen of the other." I'm sure that if I get the EPIC I won't regret not having bought the EVO, and if I get the EVO, I won't regret not having bought the EPIC. Besides, I have 30 days to try out one or the other, and if I decide I'm not comfortable with it, I can switch to the other.

In closing, it's the EVO by a hair. It's probably 51% EVO and 49% EPIC, but for now, it's the EVO I'm going with. I just hope I can get used to an all touch screen world!

The Evo takes awesome pictures once you mess with the settings. It's also beneficial to set the ISO to different numbers by the time of day. Helps a ton..

One of my Email accounts is my school district's school one (teacher here). On my BlackBerry it was not an Enterprise account, thank God. So on my EVO, I tried each of the protocols available, but I keep getting an error message telling me it "could not connect to the server." Any suggestions?

Evo has 2.2 and the epic does not. Yet.

The epic is so plastic. And anyone coming from the pre with the sliding keyboard knows how that's going to turn out.

Funny Story, my friend has just gotten an epic a few weeks ago. I had previously played with it at the Sprint store and had thought it was too plastic and cheap for my tastes, but I decided to play with my buddy's to see if it was as cheap as I remember. Well the short answer is yes. There was just something about it that made it feel like something you buy your kid.

The funny thing is, my friend was already completely on the fence about taking it back for an Evo. He said after 1 week, he already stopped using the qwerty keyboard as he felt it was pretty useless and there was just something about the UI that he didn't like. Everytime I see him, he just looks at it, shakes his head. LOL. It just goes to show you that a good phone isn't made from specs alone.

Score one more for the Evo.

So...Had the Epic for a week. Other than Swype, it just wasn't for me. No signal in my office...for starters. Battery life was awful. UI was so-so but the phone wasn't very sturdy and the keyboard was wobbly.
Although the screen definitely is prettier, the Evo is for me. I think I needed to own the Epic in order to really know this!

Yup...definitely having the phone for more than a few days helps your decision between the 2. I returned mine after a week of having it comparing it to my Evo.

I also agree. But i had changed from the evo to the epic and the camera on the epic is amazing.

When looking at my friends screen side by side with mine, while the epic has a crisp screen, it just looks pixelated and blue. It doesn't seem anywhere near a natural color. and the pixelation just bugs me. For all the talk of the screen and being the main selling point.... it just didn't do it for me.
