Excessive Battery Drain (Even On Standby)

turn on airplane mode for about 15 seconds. then turn it off. you have to do this everytime you restart the phone

Thanks for the replies. I still have no idea what you are talking about. Easiest way is to have a spare battery as far as I can see. I don't use any cell radio on my phone. Too much mumbo jumbo for me. Had I known these Android phones were not so user friendly I would have not scrapped the phone I had for 5 years.

all cell phones use a cell radio to get your wireless signal. so yes, you use it. look in settings > about phone > battery use > cell standby. if it says "time without signal" is 50%, it's draining your battery searching for a signal.

Here is a quick and easy "fix" for the cell standbye battery drain issue: first aquire/download the app "Tasker" then create a profile that states upon device boot the phone will toggle airplane mode on and then off automatically this essentially solving the issue

Thanks. I just checked it and it says cell stby 68% and time without a signal 50%. Just out of curosity why would the phone not have a signal 50% of the time?

Are you just being intentionally difficult?

This comment wasn't necessary.
Future options that won't lead to mod involvement:
1) Politely remind the person you've already answered the question and either post a link or instruct them how to find the info
2) Ignore the post and don't reply

So I would suggest you keep your stupid comments to yourself.

Here's my suggestion for you, if someone says something you don't like either ignore them, politely respond, or report it. We do have moderators for a reason.

now, everyone needs to play nice.

Regarding the TWS bug, I don't believe it impacts battery at all. Please see my google bug report on that very topic. After reading the initial bug report, check out post #2 of the bug and you'll see someone posted screen shots of supporting documentation of it being a reporting issue and not a battery drain.

What I've found is that the bug itself does not cause battery drain, but if you have the bug AND you leave 3G on, you'll end up with crazy amounts of battery draw. The battery draw is to the point where your phone can overheat and turn off. If I am wifi or data is off, the TWS bug does not cause this even though it'll still be at 50%.

I was wondering why my battery was draining ridiculously quickly without actually using the phone when the manual said it should last far longer. My partner's having the same issue with his, so I assume he has it too.

Someone wrote a free app called "Fix50" in the Market that toggles Airplane mode at boot. Not sure if it fixes the issue, but it didn't brick my Optimus V.

We'll see how it goes.

(I'd link to it, but I'm on my BB right now)

i've asked this before elsewhere in the forums but people have mentioned with android, once wifi is connected, 3g is automatically disabled.

Possible app?

Legion- I tried the Fix50 app & it did fix the reporting problem for me but didn't seem to do much if anything for the battery drain and I still got the annoying periodic data drops several times a day. Has anyone looked into making Greenmonster's directions for properly setting the radio into an app like fix50 that would kick off at reboot? I'm on day 3 (no reboot) and seem to have just about tripled my battery life and have had no data drops (or the phone has properly reconnected like it is supposed to).

There is some talk of this on an XDA forum (Developing CDMA Preferred Network permanent fix - xda-developers) but the last post was in October of 2010 and since I have fewer than 10 posts over there I can't post on dev-related forums.

Just to clarify...

Oh- this is the fix I'm referring to...

It appears that the Optimus V suffers from the same GSM/CDMA auto prl cell standby bug that affects the Evo's battery life.

To check if this bug is affecting your phone, go to AboutPhone -> BatteryUse -> CellStandby and check to if there is an entry for "Time without a signal". If your phone has a solid signal to Virgin Mobile at all times, it will read 50 percent.

To fix the issue, dial *#*#4636#*#* and it will load the testing screen. You do not have to press call. Select phone information.

My understanding of the bug is that even though the preferred network is set to "CDMA auto (PRL)", it is actually set to "GSM/CDMA auto (PRL)" because of a display bug.

The fix is to press Menu and then "Select radio band". The process will then force close. Go back to Phone info and select "CDMA only" and then select "CDMA auto (PRL)".

Interesting theory, but this has not been my experience. My experience echoes that of mmarz: if the phone isn't on wifi and I've forgotten to do the TWS fix the battery usage increases 400% and the phone gets noticeably warm.

Note that in the screen shots the phone is on wifi.

Update- data drops/TWS

So I finally had a hiccup about 9:00 last night that caused a data drop- it was right after I lost a phone call & during a pretty serious storm, so don't know if that affected anything. I'm still pretty happy- I've never gone more than three or four hours without having to do the airplane mode toggle due to data drops- 60 hours without a drop is encouraging!

Time without signal also stayed in the single digits...
