Exclamation mark next to the WiFi icon

I found this on Motorola's site:

Exclamation sign shown with WiFi connection - The exclamation point is shown when the WiFi signal is determined to be of lower quality; if there is no exclamation point the signal is higher quality. Internet access can still take place when the explanation point is showing.

This is regarding appearance of an exclamation symbol (!) in wi fi notification. All mobile towers are not 3 G compatible and some towers are still giving 2 G signals and yet to be upgraded to 3G. Hence if your mobile setting is 3 G in network settings and the nearby tower also 3 G tower the exclamation mark will not appear. If mob setting is 3 G and near tower is 2 G then it will appear. If setting is changed as 2 G in mob this will disappear. If both r not the same some times Whatsapp picture or video r not downloaded properly. This is my experience with my Motorola E2 If there is any other solution same may pl be posted

The problem is not with you phone, it is with the DNS server. That means you are properly connected to the WiFi connection but the Internet Service might be down. That is why you get that icon. I am from India and am very well accustomed to these kind of situations

No issues with your phone buddy. Call that ISP guy and make him get the line cleared for you.

Hi. I also got this kind of problem.. WiFi icon with exclamation point.. The connection is working with the other device, on my PC, my sister's PC and her phone, and all other phone except mine.. I already factory reset my phone and also tried to reset the modem but same prob.. Pls help thank u..

It means that there is problem with the wi-fi connection to the Google servers. I think it replaces the older convention of an orange icon meaning no connection to the Google servers.

No connection to Google servers can mean one of two things--a problem with the overall web connection, or a problem with the Google servers. The latter can explain how people can still connect to websites, but just not with Google sites or apps (assuming they don't also have mobile data on).

I have a question about that. What if its the same problem on a tablet? (next book Ares 8).

Welcome to Android Central! What I was describing in that post applies to wi-fi, so it shouldn't matter if you have a tablet.

Since then, I've also learned that sometimes it can help to turn off IPv6 in your router settings.

I learned, that Wifi/Mobile connections, through which the device cannot connect to Google servers are marked with an exclamation mark and the information says "connected, no internet".
As I'm in China, this is a perfectly normal situation
However, whenever any of my devices approaches home and I expect it to automatically switch from mobile internet to my Wifi, the information next to my Wifi says "no internet detected, connection cannot be established automatically" (or similar since the original message is in German) and the device remains with the mobile internet connection.
How can I overcome this and have the device to automatically switch to the Wifi? I want to define, which Wifi the phone/pad shall use. It is not for the device to override my decisions.

Anyone know what's going on here? Both mobile networking and wifi seem to be operational, but I don't know why the exclamation mark is there and why the mobile network icon is showing.

The wifi network I am connected to uses a manual proxy . . .

I can switch off mobile networking and wifi works and vice versa.

The exclamation next to WiFi not signaling properly happens wiv most lollipop is a symbol just change ur WiFi setting to static need to no ur proxy address ect...myne had same problem. When a searched a fix it just disappeared wiv out change WiFi settings

try the following: (always works in my case)
1. On the Main Screen, pulling down with your fingers to WIFI, touch it to disconnect.
2. go to Settings - WIFI - re-connect with 'On' and immediately disconnect 'Off' when you see the the WIFI signal with the exclamation mark...wait 1/2 a second and re-connect.

my post was incomplete. here goes again:

1. On the Main Screen, pulling down with your fingers to WIFI, touch it to disconnect.
2. return to Main Screen - go to Settings - touch or tip WIFI.....re-connect with 'On' and immediately disconnect 'Off' when you see the WIFI signal with the exclamation mark... . wait 1/2 a second and re-connect.
3. Under WIFI you may then see 'saved'......touch or tip WIFI upon which you get the screen with 'connect' or 'forget'...
touch or tip 'connect'...and you see the connection process.
And you are back to the normal WIFI signal.
Sounds weird but takes only a couple of seconds.

My wifi icon for S7 edge has also that exclamation point.. The connection is working with the other device, on my PC, and all other phones in the house except mine.. I already factory reset my phone but same problem..
But other wifi when connected to my phone are just working nicely and no exclamation icon.

All you need to do is:

create a new user (in Settings:Users:Add user),
screen goes blank, click power switch to refresh, swipe to open, goes to welcome screen, press arrow in circle to set up, select your wifi from the list, press finished, then hold power switch to power down, power back up again, all fixed!

Thank you so much! This worked.. been trying to figure this out for months! It has nothing to do with google servers or any of the dozens of other issues that people mentioned (at least for me). My work phone is a Moto X G2 running android 5.1.

BTW, I didn't have to do anything with the power. I just worked correctly after I connected with the new user and I deleted the new user when done and it worked from then on.
