External notification alerts while headphones/auxiliary cable in use?

I have a AT&T version of the Samsung GS4. It's stock, unmodified.

When I have my headphones plugged in or when I have an auxiliary line plugged into the phone, I still hear the notification alerts from the external speaker of the GS4. I had no idea until I was on the bus and someone informed me. Is this normal? Anyone else having this issue and was able to resolve? If there's an app that controls this, I would like to know. Thanks.

Edit: I tested the auxiliary cable after I noticed the headphones issue and still persists

I noticed the same thing. but I find this a good thing, Other wise it would be a very loud notification sound right in the middle of my song blasting in my truck. which would probably scare me to death.

I hear it both in my earphones/auxiliary line AND external speaker. I thought having headphones plugged would eliminate any external speaker noise, including notifications.

Oh that is strange. Mine just turns down the music and then plays the notifications through the phone. Not the AUX cable.
But My S4 is rooted running GPE

Mine only plays through the headphones. I guess everyone's phone is different. I noticed that when I have it running bluetooth through the car stereo playing music my noti will play through both the phone and the speaker so it sounds like an echo. (I HATE how it has to pause music to play a noise, thats the one thing I miss about my Blackberry.)
