Got my Galaxy Nexus yesterday and am having trouble getting my facebook contacts to show in the people app so I can join them to mobile contacts.

Has anyone else had this problem or know of a possible solution?

Thanks in advance,

Didn't Google stop you being able to sync contacts with the Facebook app? I remember reading something about them claiming it violated the terms of service or something.

There's a few apps on the marketplace that will sync contact photos, but I don't know if they are compatible with ICS.

So they stopped that? Wow so much for openness.

I think it's more like Facebook hasn't yet implemented the new API for ICS.

Last time I flashed my Desire, I went into the Facebook app, told it to sync all contacts, joined them in People and then switched Facebook back to sync existing contacts only.

I was going to try this but there's either no menu button in the facebook app for ICS or I'm being extremely thick.

Nope, ever since Gingerbread release they stopped Facebook connect. Something about Google and Facebook fighting over privacy issues.

All the more reason to own an iPhone! :)

Seriously though, let that be a lesson to all these "Mom and Pop" shops who think they're bigger than the king of search. Won't update your social network application to respect Google's recently changed privacy conditions? Get run out of town by Google's new social network.

Essentially Google was providing a custom API to Facebook but Facebook wouldn't provide an API for Google. Google decided, enough we're not maintaining a custom API just for Facebook if Facebook won't reciprocate. And because Facebook doesn't have an API to interface with the contacts that's where we are today. That is if I recall it correctly.

On February 22, 2011, Google removed Facebook connect sync from the Nexus S and will block it from future Nexus devices. Here is their quote:

It basically boils down to the fact that you can't export your contact data Facebook to Google (or at all) while you can import your contact data from Google to Facebook. Google does not believe that this is fair. I agree with Google here.

“We believe it is very important that users are able to control their data. So in the over-the-air update for Nexus S, we have a small change to how Facebook contacts appear on the device. For Nexus S users who downloaded the Facebook app from Android Market, Facebook contacts will no longer appear to be integrated with the Android Contacts app. Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability. Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data. We are removing the special-case handling of Facebook contacts on Nexus S and future lead devices. We continue to believe that reciprocity (the expectation that if information can be imported into a service it should be able to be exported) is an important step toward creating a world of true data liberation — and encourage other websites and app developers to allow users to export their contacts as well.”

It is probably going to be available if you use the facebook version that comes with skinned versions of android.
