Facebook Messenger - Not Getting Push Notifications

For a couple weeks I have not been getting any notifications from FB Messenger. Is anyone else having this issue? I saw a couple reviews on its Google Play app page saying the same. I really need it to work as it's my preferred messaging app. I tried installing older versions but no luck. Also another weird thing is that this also started happening around the time I tried out Facebook Lite but I uninstalled it quickly.
