Facebook messenger notifications not working

This is how I fixed mine..
I have an LG phone so you may have a different path to get here but.. I went to my phone settings then I went to Apps.. I looked and noticed that all of the apps had allow background data turned on.. Except for the one and only.. FaceBook Messenger.. It must have somehow got turned off.. So I turned on allow background data for it.. And I started getting my notifications again immediately.

So click...
Settings
Apps
Messenger
Data
Turn on bg data if it is off and that should fix it

Hi, so I have been struggling with this issue as well, but I found a workaround. Try using Messenger lite. I'm not sure if the notification comes 100% of the time (I haven't used it that long) but it's MUCH better than the original messenger.

THE SOLUTION that worked for me:
So I have a xiaomi redmi 3 and as you know xiaomi smartphones asks you to accept/decline almost any app activity, so i've been all the day looking for a solution that suits me and after messing around with settings I found an option from the apps notifications in settings, it showed my installed apps so I chose Messenger (BTW If you are in the notification settings INAPP than you are not where I'm) and after reading all of them I found this option: "Indepedent tab..." sort of because I have it in french.

Same issue, after few minutes of idling messenger disconnects from the internet and im not recieving any notifications. Was trying to fix that whole day, but nothing worked. It seems like some problem with app itself, since some update.

I just fixed the issue! So (I'm using Samsung Galaxy S9) go to Setting, Notifications, Advanced (upper right), Messenger, tap "Chats and Calls" and make sure "Do not disturb custom exception" is switched to ON, go back and tap "Group chat mentions" and do the same thing. And so on. I believe it's the "Do not disturb" that's stopping you from receiving the notifications.

*made an account just to reply lol*

If this is still a problem for anyone, I finally figured it out on my S9. I had my battery saving mode set to mid and it was stopping notifications. Go to Settings>Battery and turn off power saving mode. Hope that helps!!

I also had this same problem where I wasn't getting any notifications from Messenger Lite. I think the problem for me was that I had 'data saver' enabled, which prevented Messenger from receiving anything in the background. I would only see notifications once I opened Messenger.

To fix this I went into Settings -> Apps -> Messenger -> Data Usage and I enabled unrestricted data usage. What this does is it gives the messenger app unrestricted data access when Data Saver is on. Also make sure Background data is enabled.

This issue is for those who had "Data Saver on".

My friend had the same problem on Samsung A6. The thing that actually resolved the problem was through a setting named "Apps that can appear on top" or sth. similar. I found it through SETTINGS - APPS - SPECIAL ACCESS - APPS THAT CAN APPEAR ON TOP. Both Facebook and Messenger were not checked. After checking them the messages started to show on top of the display once again.
Hope to help you!

Hi,

I had same issue, so I was reading your posts and I was thinking, why some of your ideas works for one, but not for other. And I think I figured it out.

To fix the issue just go to Settings > Notifications > Scroll down and open Remind notification > turn it off for Facebook and turn it on for Messenger.

If it still doesn't work, go back and check if you have turned on Messenger and Facebook notifications.

It works for me. Let me know if it works for you as well.

1. Swipe down on screen and go to settings (gear thing in top right corner)

2. Go to "apps"

3. Scroll down to "messanger" or what app your not getting notifications from.

4. Click on "notifications"

5. Click on "chats and calls" (mine said "no sound" in blue under it)

6. Change "importance" to high.

7. Repeat for any of the notifications you want sound on for that says "no sound" (repeat steps 4 to 6)

Ok guys go to settings notifications then click on messenger then click chats and calls set importance to urgent pops up on screen.

I had similar issue. Was very frustrating not to recieve messages properly as I should from the app. I'd have to go into my messages and everytime it would say "connecting to network" and it would happen having 4G lte and wifi. I would mess around with the settings and nothing. I even reinstalled the app which would fix the problem for a few days. Later did I find out that i had the setting turned on for my battery to have the messenger app optimized which would not let it run in the background and would prevent my messages from coming in as they should. I turned off that setting for the app and it fixed the problem. I also had the S8+ at the time.

I am seriously losing the will to live with my s8 😣 bit dramatic I know but i have tried absolutely everything to fix my messenger notifications and nothing has worked 😭 browsed every forum and help page...No luck! Anyone had this problem? I only get my messages as soon as i open it up...Even when ive got the Facebook app open they don't appear

It sounds like a samsung problem or more specifically an s8 bug. I'm surprised a phone reset didn't fix it! Can't be a general android issue or an app issue else everyone would have it... Can you subscribe to any beta updates to see if that fixes it?

See, I have an iPhone, and I don't get notifications half of the time, and I've re downloaded it and tried everything. Still not working correctly.
