Facial scanner flaw.

For those that haven't seen this news yet.

The Galaxy S8’s facial scanner can, unsurprisingly, be tricked with a photo.

"Just days after Samsung*unveiled*the Galaxy S8’s new facial-scanning feature, someone has already successfully spoofed it. Bloggers at*Marcianophone*secured a S8 with their face and then tricked the phone with a selfie that was saved on another device. The S8 eventually unlocked, though it took a few seconds."

Thankfully it has fingerprints scanners, pin code and pattern lock.

Samsung should have enough time before official launch to investigate this and apply any relevant patches.

Iris scanner is not facial recognition. Iris scanner is as secure as fingerprint.

You should either delete this thread or change the title of it. Iris scanner is not the same as facial recognition.

Not so much an iris scanner flaw as it is a facial recognition flaw. I'll never use the facial recognition feature just because it can be fooled so easily.

99 percent sure this will be fixed before the final software hits the market. Once again, people making a big deal about a phone that isn't even out yet.

O yea because if I lose my phone, somebody is going to print a photo of me? They won't know who I am.

The photo has to be very clear and at the perfect angle and lighting. I'm still going to use it. Samsung will probably fix it anyway.

I agree with you. If your phone being locked is of importance then you should be using password, fingerprint,or Iris scan. Facial to me is just a convenience if it works good.

The face scan is a convenience, a "better than nothing" solution. Its sole purpose is that it's the fastest way to unlock the phone. Adding blinks to confirm it's a live face adds time to the process, which moots the point of it.

It's not secure secure, but it's real world secure, especially if you don't pose for hi-res headshots. It works if you don't want people screwing with your phone if you put it down and turn your back or a stranger picks it up off the street. But if you're the mark in a heist movie, it's not your best option.

It reminds me of the hubbub over the fingerprint scanner on the S5 being insecure because if you could lift a nice thumbprint and make a silicone mold from it and then perfectly replicate the angle and pressure of the thumb swipe, you could get into the phone. How many times did this happen in real life? I'm pretty sure never. Static images fooling face scan was an issue back in the ICS days. How many times did hackers actually do this? Also probably never.

Samsung already stated they fix the issue... It doesn't open with pic anymore

The mark in a heist movie, huh? Then I would just use my 4 digit pin code. There is a 1 in 3,333 chance of getting it unlocked with MY secure method. 3 strikes and you're out.

Can someone close this thread. This was done with preproduction software. It does not happen with the retail units.
