Factory reset came back in German

Galaxy tab A T550. Android 6. 9.7 screen.

I reset my tab A T550 running android 6 to factory settings. The reset worked except now the tab is in German language. I need English. I have reset this tab before and this never happened. Now I can't get through the setup process. Have tried uning a German to English translator and I get a ways through the process then it refuses an email address and stops.

What happens if you do a hardware key factory reset through the Recovery Menu? https://www.hardreset.info/devices/samsung/samsung-t550-galaxy-tab-a-97/hardreset/first-method/. Does that show up in English or German?

The device was presumably intended for the German market, and has a Germany-specific firmware installed. But I'm used to the device asking the user upon the first boot to select a language -- that doesn't happen at all?
