Factory reset stuck on "erasing"

Nexus 7 2013 32gb 5.0.2 unrooted

I was getting a persistent error, so I told it to do a factory reset. It sat on the "erasing" screen for about 3 hours before I held power down, then did the volume down + power for menu. No matter what option I choose, it goes back to "erasing". I've let it go on for long periods of time multiple times. Twice it went to the red triangle screen. Suggestions?

I was able to get to the tablet via USB for commands, and try to reflash Android that way. So far it's stuck on erasing as well, though it's only been about 10-15 minutes, so I'll let it sit a while longer before I mess with it. I'm concerned there is bad sectors in the memory causing it to hang up...

Any advice or tips would be welcomed. It's been sitting on "erasing userdata..." for well over an hour. I can't flash a fresh image to it without unlocking the bootloader, and trying to unlock the bootloader just results in "erasing userdata..."

Got an RMA from Asus. Here's hoping they're reasonable with their repair cost. Kinda kicking myself for not picking up a spare one of these when it was $100 for a refurb one on Woot a while back.

Can you get into Recovery? I'm having the same problem after getting stuck at the Google splash screen. Won't boot and won't go into recovery. So cant flash a factory image.

I can get to the recovery screen, and send Fastboot commands, but they always hang on "erasing userdata". Boot is still locked, and the process for unlocking hangs on "erase userdata", so I can't flash the stock firmware manually.

Download the android SDK , latest Java and wugfresh root toolkit from the internet then turn off your nexus completely , turn on the nexus by holding power and volume down at the same time to go into recovery then from there connect it to your PC and use the tools in wugfresh kit to erase all data and factory reset ..

Would that not require an unlocked bootloader? Mine is not unlocked, and refuses to unlock...

*edit* I'm reading their FAQs, and it's not quite clear yet if I need to unlock the bootloader to use wugfresh, or if wugfresh will unlock the bootloader as part of its process. Still reading...

Figured I'd give this a shot, since I'm out of warranty anyway. Flash Stock + Unroot doesn't work because the bootloader isn't unlocked. Unlock doesn't work, it hangs just like it does when I send the command via command prompt. I'm looking through the advanced tools, etc, for other things to try. I'm open to suggestions.

So far I haven't figured out anything I can actually accomplish with wugfresh tools, because I can't unlock the bootloader. The process for unlocking the bootloader calls for wiping user data, which is where it hangs.

Damn , I thought that would sort it I'll do some digging around on the internet and get back to you if I find anything , wait a sec I've just thought of something - did you download the android SDK if so then download the software for your nexus from Google factory images and on that website it tells you how to unlock your boot loader by typing in some command prompts so try that if successful then unzip the contents of your downloaded rom and place into android SDK/ platform tools and then click on flash all.bat it will then say waiting for device so restart your tablet but before it starts to boot hold down power and volume down to get it into fastboot mode the PC should then take over the process
If that doesn't work then quote my post so I get notified and I'll try something else.... Good luck!

Even if you can't unlock the bootloader via the websites instructions then try what I said anyway and see if it starts to flash your new ROM..

Before I tried the wugfresh tools, I was trying these sorts of things via the command prompt. For the most part, the wugfresh tools are just typing in the common command prompt commands for you. If you know of a command other than "fastboot oem unlock" that will unlock the bootloader, I'm interested, but that's the command that the wugfresh tool uses, and it hangs the same either way.

Well there is a tool what you can use and its called motochopper I used it on my nexus 2012 edition and it unlocked my bootloader but you'll have to see if it compatible with your device.

Shipped the tablet to Asus yesterday. I've found a fair number of similar stories, and often the tablet gets returned repaired without cost (aside from the cost of shipping to them), so that's what I'm hoping for. Still mulling over where "the line" is on how much I'll spend to fix it if they do call with an estimate.

Thanks for the link, it does seem to be getting really common, and seems like there's either a fair number of devices with faulty flash memory, or there's an issue with Android that's bricking devices.

OMG, and i have same problem... i can't erase my flash :'(

My final fix ended up being a motherboard replacement. Asus wanted over $200 for the mobo replacement, but I was able to get a 16gb mobo off Amazon for $30-40 and replace it myself.
