As far as I know all pics should be restored, whether in private mode I'm not sure of. Meaning you might have to simply put them back in private mode after the backup is restored.
I'll see if I can find any more info for you :)
I assume you have not done the factory reset yet?

Just checked. Mine seem to be gone. Not a big deal for me because they are on Dropbox, but something to be aware of.

Kies actually tells you in the backup panels that it won't backup Private items unless you unhide them. I don't have any myself, but I did a backup last week and remember seeing it in the program.

I would have thought kies would back up all media :(
There are recovery apps out there - I'll look into it for you

**Edit**

Were your pic's on an external SD card?
There are several threads on the net regarding lost files after a factory reset. If the pic's were on your phones memory ( not the external SD card) they could be gone :( there is still hope though - as it seems some believe that even pic's stored to the phone can be recovered.

There looks to be several options, Google "recover deleted pictures after factory reset" & read up on the options that come up (more than likely some are paid options - so be aware of that).
If your pics were on the SD card there's still a chance they are hidden on the SD card.
Still this depends on where you set the storage of your camera - to phone or to external SD card?
I hope this helps :)
