Farewell Xoom

The NC is an impressive little package but its not for me. My buddy loves his though and tried selling me on it but I need something with a bigger screen for one

I am just glad there are other options because IOS was boring as hell and i want to customize my phone, my way.

Isn't the argument that you can jailbreak an iphone and do everything you'd ever want with it? Stevo may not like it, but its not like we can "officially" get service on a rooted android phone anyway.

Personally I am not a fan of jailbreaking or rooting my devices. I have done it but why should it be our job to fix these devices.

iPad = Prius Xoom=Pickup truck. How could even compare. One the price is right it is what it is .... meaning out of the box it is at full potential. The Xoom WILL be tricked out in a matter of weeks. For me being able to download a zip file unzip it and use it or download torrents and pirate music directly onto my device is much more useful to me than a cheaper price tag. At the end of the day it really comes down to your usage. It's not the device, it's the user. My husband loves his iPad but then again I supply his music and root his Droid X and make it run liberty. He like the iPad specifically cause he doesn't have to do anything. I myself like messing with every setting. But I must say I'm jealous of the covers on the iPad 2 ;-)

I love this tread. Let me tell you I have supported Android since launch, my entire family is on Android phones. We were the same way with the Palm software. But as with the Palm OS Android has not gotton their engineers in line like apple. iOS plain just work and MOTO has blown a great oportuintiy with me and my purchasing power by putting out a sub-par device. Sure it was great for two weeks. But when placed side by side with the IPAD Moto and Android looses . 4g not released, SDS not workiing, flash (future release) , apps missing. I am not going down the same path I did with Palm and Windows with the Android product. Apple just plain works and that little voice inside of you say ?yes he is right? . It has saturated the market (Like windows desktop) to the point where you would be a fool not to get on the train. I give an my family give up, I have decided to be Adam and bite the Apple. I am so tied of explaining to my kid s and wife that this is good, look what it can do or better yet what it will do. The only real advantage to Android is GPS period. Sorry if you fell I?m a apple fan boy; heck I don?t even have an Apple anything yet. But I see the writing on the wall. It?s like buying a Yugo vs a Mercedes .
I have been forcusing on the the Xoom forum , I want Android, I want it to work. Heck I?ve been to Best Buy and the VZ store almost daily. I feel kinda wierd that I am so fixated over this purchase. But I know this will set my purchasing path for at lest the next five to six years. Apple Works, Medical, Airlines, Games, even the U.S Congres is? face it the world is Apples.
Moto you blew a great opportunity, I was there, I waited, I wanted, I?am a Droil lover. Why didin?t you make a unit that worked!
Well I?m still a linux fan boy I? m just sad Google didin?t see or plan far enogh to slap Apple in the face.
When in all boils down it comes to Size and Speed and this is the bottom line. If you are on the fence just compare the year old outdated IPAD 1 to he Xoom. Then say to yourself ?What the heck was MOTO thinking? Yogo to Mercedes? think about it.
Size and speed does matter. The only major deciding factor is Flash & GPS vs proven stable device that people already use. Look to the furture, Medical, Airlines, Schools even the Congress just got approval to us IPADs, at least here in Texas. Netflicks, Fface Bbooks everything works, internet works it all work s Now! Sorry but it is what it is.
While Android provided its first solid and real Apple Killer it came up short. The real judge is how many people buy the Xoom vs the IPAD. Where would you put your investment?

How are you going to complain about the xoom missing features that the ipad2 will NEVER have...

...at least the xoom will have them eventually and it wont cost more....

Man don't even give him the time of day...he made the same trolling post over at Phandroid:Ipad or Xoom?? - Page 4 - Android Forums

If you search his post history there you'll see he was calling Apple "Crapple" just a week or two ago:

http://androidforums.com/motorola-xoom/286855-people-complaining.html#post2358193

Now he says Android is a Yugo and Apple's a Mercedes. He's just a troll...and the worst part is he acts like he knows what he's talking about but he has NEVER owned either product.

Completely agree. Users need to stop with the " In order for Android to win, apple has to lose attitude." Its stupid. I'm not bias with a well made system, even tho it may have some flaws, or the company polices suck.

Yes, in my opinion Android is better overall, as its my choice for a phone, not so much a pad. Any owners loyal to one brand are sorely mistaken if they think their device is the end and be all of devices. Example: Lets take apps. When it comes to quality of apps, apple wins. No, I'm not talking numbers. Numbers don't mean nothing. I'm talking about the polish of the apps. If you take comparable apps, and compare them, the apple app is more polished and usually by a wide margin. Do I know why? No, but I will not deny something that I can clearly see with my own eyes that shows me the difference, and will not hate on one, just to feel like mine is better.

Example: I have a Ipad I wifi tether to my Dinc when I want a big internet screen when I'm standing in line. Also love the pdf and comic readers it has. The Elements app is awesome. Its a great tool. Regardless of superior specs it doesn't matter in real world performance, if the software isn't optimize to use it. At this time IOS is still a more optimize OS then Honeycomb, and runs smoother even on crappy specs.

Ergo...Android Is also great. Google Maps, Google translate, an Voice texting are all superior. Having widgets is also a great option. The snapping of word text when you browse the internet beats IOS big time of having to scroll from left to right to read the text.

So you really just have to take a hard look at what features on each OS you would use the most, and choose wisely. Better yet, if you can get both. You get the best of both worlds and can do all things instead of limiting yourself to just one OS.

Now before someone starts the stupid fan boy crap, I am not bias or loyal to any one system or device. I have a PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PC, Mac Book, DS, PSP. All I care about is performance in a UI more then anything.

There are some things IOS does better then Android, and some things Android does better then IOS. This is pointless, much like XBOX 360 vs PS3. Options and choices are a good thing people. :)

The Android platform beats apple in someways, as Apple beats Android in others. So just enjoy both, other wise your just lying to yourselves.

Live Wallpapers and widgets is not enough to spend an absurd amount of money on a tablet. Today, it does nothing that justifies the price being much more than iPad. It just doesn't. We will see over the next couple of weeks and months the price drop tremendously on the 3g/4g version so they can actually compete because it's just not worth it. Buggy software, no apps, can't use the stuff that differentiates it from the iPad 400 bucks more? Ummmm ok.

I too had the Xoom. I activated at Costco on Launch day and bought 2 docks and a case. I was committed. I took it home and came with the harsh fact that most of my purchased content was on iTunes and all of my Digital Copy movies were on iTunes as well. I had to purchase a $40 DRM software to try to get the vids to work on Xoom. Would work unless it was very low quality (descale). However, it worked fine on my Inspire 4G.

After much debate, I deactivated it on the way to work after 3-days from purchase and boxed everything up. I chickened out with the promise of 4G in the future and the Hotspot 4G on the go. I called VZW back and reactivated on the way home from work (and getting a new activation fee). I thought about my usability, apps, content and such that I have on my iPhone 4 (work) iPad 32GB - 3G (work/personal and iPad 32GB - WiFi (home only). Overall, my cost was less about the wallet but the quality of the content and ease of use. I know Android is for geeks (I am one of them because I did the same gyration with Inspire vs Atrix - ended up with the Inspire). But iOS just integrates so well with OSX (my primary OS).

Overall, I retured everything for the Xoom. I still needed gadget therapy so I went to the Apple store and pickedup a brand new Quad Core MBP 17" for almost 3.5x the price of a Xoom. Go figure.

It was the ecosystem that everyone is talking about that did for me.

Well, that sums it all up. I Have exactly the same thing...I'm an equal opportunity gadget freak: PS3, 360 Kinect, Will, ThinkPads, Mac Book Air, MacBook Pros, DSLite, PSP, iPad, Kindle, Zune, Inspire 4G. Overall, I'm extremely happy with the Apple/Kindle system and XBox/Zune/Windows. Wasn't sure if I was ready for a 3rd.

The device is just a means to the services/experience and each device/service combo provides a unique focused experience for each person and need (gadget amusement park?).

Connectedness has become such a priority in our household that when we closed escrow on our first house, my wife asked me when we would be getting Internet service. Never mind that video, electricity, gas, phone, water and sanitation have not even been connected yet.

Hm.

And Netflix. Definitely needs NF.
I agree about Netflix on Xoom. Last Spring Netflix announced that it had hired Android devs to work on the .apk streaming for the platform but it was taking each Android device individually due to DRM licensing, secuity and maybe hardware constraints. With so many different Androids in the food chain it might be awhile before Netflix gets around to providing streaming to the newer devices. I remember thinking last May that I was going to get it on my HTC Incredible by Q4. But Christmas & New Years have come and gone, still no Netflix, so I'm not encouraged. My guess is that once a Netflix.apk is available it won't be long till it's ported to the entire Android community thanks to genius devs.

No and it never will. Jobs hates flash and flash hates him back.. lol.
Gotta love that remark! I remember when Jobs announced the impending death of Flash. I guess he tried to slip it some poisoned Apple juice.... Its death was greatly exaggerated! So far it's alive and kicking. Now if Moto's Xoom devs can get Flash up and running soon that'll be one less coffin nail to brag about -- listening Stevie?

Once can't possibly be this ignorant, can they?

This probably the dumbest thing I've heard this year. So people that buy Apple products are idiots? Are you serious? The vast majority that buy Android devices don't even know what Android is. They just know the name of the phone they have and because the store rep told them is the next best thing or better than the iPhone. They have no clue what Android is, the "openness" of it and how to take advantage of it. You think people buy Apple's products just because it's cool well here's the main reason: They just work. Period. What does your Xoom do right now that the iPad doesn't? Let me guess live wallpaers and widgets. Ummmmm ok that certainly makes the device better. You're probably one of those users that don't mind the fact that google allowed apps in to their app store that can hack your phone. Because what ever Google allows is ok with you. You're the worst kind of fan boy.... one that just says idiotic things just to type something.
Stop hating! You made the guy's arguement when you said, "Once (One?) can't possibly be this ignorant, can they?"

The biggest selling point for Apple products are in their simplicity and ease of use. That's a good thing, I agree -- to a point. While it doesn't mean that their users are idiots it does say that the majority of them might be easily confused with flashy interfaces and options that require more than cursory thinking ability. I get the feeling that the typical iPad user wouldn't know how to set the time and date on their DVD players (the ol' flashing 12:00A on the display...). OK, that might be a little harsh, but I just think that the more technical minded persons actually embrace complexity as a challenge and don't think of it as a negative to have to use their brains in compelling ways.

I do agree that the Android Marketplace has apps with dangerous threats but that has little to do with Android devices and attests more to Open Source SDK's and clever mischievous makers (many of which have been proven or supected to have Apple fanboy origins). Also, a free society invites more shenanigans and criminal activities than a dictatorship but that doesn't mean that the dictatorship represents a better living experience!

I wonder what will die first Flash or Jobs.

Here is hoping they both live long. their fight is great for this industry.

Netflix Please

I really wish Netflix would be available for Android, especially on the Xoom.

I took my Xoom back after five days. I am a Sprint EVO user and am used to unlimited data. Since this was my only Verizon product I was not able to get logged onto MyVerizon. The site sends you a text, but the Xoom doesn't do texting. That is the only way to get the password instantly. I waited for my password in the regular mail and it didn't work. Verizon said I had to redo and wait for another mailing. No thanks. Three of the four Verizon representatives insisted that the Xoom does texting. I am not interested in iPad. I will wait for a WiFi version of the Xoom. Maybe by then the unit will be ready for prime time, SD card access, Flash. I am interested to see what Toshiba, LG, Archos and Samsung will be bring to the tablet scene.
