Farewell Xoom

Exactly. Apple always demos the device for everyone to see. Highlight the features and show us why they believe it's great. Not android stuff. They just tell us what it does (Droid Does?) with a bunch of robotic sounds and flash the name on the screen and that's it. Stop telling us what you do so much better than the competition AND SHOW US.

+1 on this. I have YET to meet a person (including iphone owners) have not been impressed when I SHOW them what I can do with my Evo... I have long waited for any product based on Android to showcase it's unique things like swype, dlna, multiple form factors... AND also show that it still has what you already like (angry birds, Kindle, Pandora)... The xoom could have been that one. If I were moto, I would have had EVERY commercial being half of it showing some attractive 25-35 yr old woman using the top 5 apps that were on IPAD (but of course on the xoom), followed by the other half showing things unique (i.e. hdmi connectivity, 4G connectivity, taking the sd card out of the camera into the xoom). Ice the cake with a catchy phrase (heck use the old mazda "zoom zoom" thing) and/or a late 80's classic rock song in the background. One-two punch of 'you have nothing to loose, and everything to gain'. Key component is 'SHOW'. I actually was asked "oh, Apple came out with a new ipad already?" after a XOOM commercial just came on... That's partly a testament to Apple's success, but more so an indictment of Moto's failure to properly launch.

I really am almost embarrassed at Motorola for their botched Xoom launch. This should have been HUGE! Instead, it launches without Flash (no big deal, but early adopters have to wait a month or so for the software), no LTE (bigger deal, requires user to mail back the unit, and do without it for a week), and generally a half baked user experience. They should have waited until all their pieces were in place before launching ANYTHING. They should have launched with wi-fi only version first, THEN the Verizon model with LTE already good to go out of the box.

As a side note, I am really concerned with the trend of all tablets being sold with 3G/4G wireless and data plans. Most of us already have smartphones, and the ability to tether wireless...why do these companies INSIST on trying to sell us yet another overpriced data plan??? I am quite happy with the connectivity I get with my Nook Color tethered to my Epic. I am also quite happy that I am not shelling out ANOTHER $50 a month for another data plan!

Tethering isn't for everyone. I used my Nexus S to tether my ipad WiFi and it was more of a pain in the ass then I anticipated. It killed my battery. I ended up having to buy a spare battery. Having it built in is much better.

The other big difference is that Apple actually shows you what the device can do, both in it's ads and in it's presentations. Google and moto have showed some of the Xoom's capabilities at the shows, but then for ads they give us this bull$sh!t spaceship crap. I live on the planet earth, I am not a spartan in halo, I like to see what my tablet can really do, not some fantasy fanboy world where my xoom is flying me to mars to battle aliens. Lame.

Ha ha ha - +1. This is so true. When you see an iPad advertisement, what do you see? The iPad...taking up almost the entire frame. There is not a Transformers-style galactic adventure that none of us will ever embark on happening in the background - just static white. Then what happens? They race you through as much functionality and as many apps as they can in 30 seconds. It is advertising perfection in motion. They understand that not everyone wants the same things, so they show you a ton of scenarios.

It is so simple - Apple created the tablet market. They are the leader. Copy them. There is no shame in imitating successful marketing and advertising strategies. Plus, by using similar tactics, you are marketing yourself as a direct alternative to the competition. That's what their tablet does, here's what ours does. Instead, we have two ads that have highlighted the fact that Google Maps is cool and three-dimensional now and received the following messages:

Buy Apple and you're a mindless sheep. Don't follow the flock - liberate yourself and be a hipster with impeccably toussled hair, a sweater-vest and a murse.

and

When you boot up the Xoom, a transformer might pick you up and whisk you away on an intergalactic adventure!

Think about it: a few months ago the Xoom owned CES. Now look at this forum for a snapshot at what technies think about what they delivered. Then think about the average consumer and which way they might go, especially given that millions upon millions of these target consumers already own iPods and probably didn't appreciate the Motorola implication that they were brainwashed, emotionless drones...that ran during the Super Bowl...that over 100 million people watched.

I'm with you, the price is the reason i'm getting the iPad 2. Sold my iPad on ebay for $420 and buying an iPad 2 for $500. Can't beat that.

And Verizon didn't help either. They just show commercials with lighting bolts flashing around and robotic sound effects in the background. I would think they want to show why you should pay them money for a data plan each month. It almost makes users think that these companies have something to hide when it comes to Android and that it's just smoke and mirrors more than anything.

Good point. You can't insult people as they may have products by the company and then try to sell them yours. You're telling me I'm a mindless sheep but I should do what you say.... uh ok.

It reminds me of the same EVO commercial from Sprint. The commercial does nothing but tells the viewer what CNET, PC Mag etc.. have said about the EVO yet doesn't show WHY they say that. Show me why the reviewer said it's the iPhone killer. I'm not just going to take your word for it..... show me something to backup those opinions.

Yes, because the Droid Does campaign didn't help people get excited about android. AT ALL. Right?

That doesn't mean it's the best way to market a tablet. Nor does it mean that using more than 1 way of pushing a product is a bad thing. Since this is a 600-800 device, you need to do more than just have a robotic Droid does voice in the background. The marketing for a $600-$800 device should be a little more informative than a $200 device.

what I did was present a very cool marketing campaign in the form of very futuristicy commercials and people came flocking to buy them, not knowing much about the product.

After looking at all the ipad2 specs and videos, the only difference i see from the ipad1 is the cameras and size, oh and the new chip set. Still the same ol ios as before. Look I dont think that ios or android is end all be all of os's. They both have their good and their bad. It comes down to user preference and the big one, MARKETING. Apple kills everyone else in that department.

On a side note I really enjoy reading everyones comments about how there are no apps for the xoom which is why they are leaning towards or going to the ipad2. It makes me think back to the day when I bought the ipad1 on launch day and said the same thing about it, where are all the ipad apps? But sure enough they came, and so will the apps for the xoom. Its a new device and new os, it takes time. This can be said about the iphone and other droid phones, at first launch the apps were lacking, now you have more than you can d/l onto your device.

As for price, if you really want something, price wont matter. Thats why I drive a BMW and pay for a new one every two years or so regardless of price, I like to drive them. Same can be said for anything in life, if like it enough and really want one you will pay what they want for it.

I actually do recall the droid does campaign showing multitasking capabilities.

Agreed this "Gieco commercial" mentality exists just to mask the devices shortcomings.

its not just marketing and mindshare. Its execution. I hate frutco just as much as the next hater but its getting ridiculous how companies want to compete with half-butt products.

Exactly. People are not going to flock to pay 800 bucks for a device they know nothing about. When there's a cheaper (just as good) one available that they already know a lot about. You need more substance for people to drop that kind of cash because right now you only have Android enthusiasts really interested in the Xoom.

Yeah but it's making people want it that's key. If they don't know about it or what it does that's so great and don't care about, how will they want it? They won't. You surely don't keep buying BMWs because of the commercials. I'm pretty sure actually seeing and knowing what it does makes it worth the price to you.

I think it sells the iPad short saying it is just marketing. The iPad is a solid tablet that meets the needs of it's users. Personally I prefer the Xoom, but I understand what smart people would choose the iPad over the Xoom. I can also understand why lemmings would, but let's not clump all iPad users into that category. Android has it's fair share of lemmings too.

That's true too. It's not just marketing. The iPad works. And that's what ultimately sells the product. But before people actually know it works, the marketing has to make people want the device and that's what Apple does. And I agree with you, if anyone thinks Apple products only sell because of marketing and disregard functionality is being a bit naive.

The droid campaign was different because:
1. it was the first quality smartphone that could directly compete with the iphone at the time
2. They compared it to the iphone stating what it does and what the iphone doesn't
3. They showed via the cool spinning globe of apps, what apps you could run and do on the droid

The xoom campaign is all about spaceships and unicorns and not showing any apps or functions. Instead of a spinning globe of apps, they'd have a minicooper with a couple of apps, with a flash app running behind yelling "I'm almost there!" And 4G yelling "wait for me!".

For the same reason that people flock to the ipad is the same reason that majority of android users dont. i recommend the ipad to anyone that doesnt know computers nor cares to. The ipad/iphone hands down caters to the no tech savy people. You all should know this when you ask anyone why they like the iphone/ipad over android.

pick any one of the 3 responses and this is what you'll get:

1) "everyone has them they're cool"
2) the apps (phones have had apps since 1998, lookup brew Qualcomm)
3) ease of use

Apple absolutely did it right. shoot, i am glad apple did what they did phones were garbage until apple released the iphone. OS's sucked and lagged all hell. Once someone finally pushed the market it flourished.
I am just glad there are other options because IOS was boring as hell and i want to customize my phone, my way.

I also said earlier that Apps are also somthing important to me. Not huge but important. Being able to show my son movies on long car rides, facetiming (see above), there are lots of reasons for me. I gave the idea of a NC but after trying my co-workers, it was too laggy.

A rooted NC can get you most apps that will work on Eclair including most media players. Yeah, my wife facetimes with her dad between her iPhone to her Dad's iPod touch, so I can see upgrading for that. Though I think the iPad2 is getting the same camera as the touch, which is ugly.
