Farewell Xoom

Bold move to overprice a tab in the same market where the ipad exists.

And its kinda rushed to market too. Too many promised features. Apple generally doesn't make mistakes like that.

I think that exactly is the problem. And judging from negative posts about the Xoom around the internet, most people feel the same. How can a company expect people to buy a product that ISN'T necessary, and costs only $200 less than Apple's cheapest laptop? Between spending $800 or $1000, I'm going MacBook!

I have yet to read what the profit margin is for Motorola, but I saw somewhere that what makes it expensive are the cameras? This is the first real tablet to compete with the iPad and it does so in just about every aspect except for price and apps. It's just too bad that Apple is so closed with these portable devices.

Logmein for Honeycomb

It also still needs an anyconnect VPN client from cisco. This may cause me to sell my Xoom I got with the 25% off.

I have the Xoom doing most of what I need it to do, but the VPN issue has me teetering on the birng of an iPad2 despite the fact I think the Xoom may be the long term better product. I need to be able to connect to my work computer, and currently cant with my Xoom.

Logmein for Honeycomb coming soon. May not work for you, but this will be great for my work computers.

i think the wifi only not been available at launch is confusing purchasers. everybody keeps comparing the 3g/4g xoom to the wifi only ipad (2)... if you compare the 3g ipad (2) to the xoom, things arent that extreme.. specially if you have in mind that you wont need special adapter sfor the hdmi or usb ports, or that you can expand the memory with a sd card if you want, or the pleasure of enjoying the web as is.. with flash.

Neither one is a bad device to be honest with you, it all comes down to personal preference when all is said and done. I personally prefer Moto's products I always have, way before all these consumer based cell phone products were avail to general public. I am android for life...I am consumed with them. I also own a MacBook and wouldn't trade that for the world either. Yes Moto needs to still refine the Xoom ALOT at this point, it does have several glitches, but I do think this device is going to be "the way to go" in the future. Apple is the most innovative company out there hands down, Android is the most innovative OS out there.

Here's a better question: if the iPad was good enough, what in the hell makes the iPad 2 worth paying another $600+ for? The iPad clearly isn't too slow, and the dual-core processor is nothing. Are you paying $600 for the neat little cover? The cameras? It can't be the cameras. Surely someone like yourself has enough money that you've got a pretty new phone, right?

I sold my iPad in hopes of branching away from Apple and trying something new. I thought the Xoom would be just the ticket. After a weekend of use though I found that I wasnt doing anything vastly different on the Xoom. And that is the main reason why I have decided to go back to Apple. After getting my money returned to me (800+), I can grab the next gen iPad and save myself some money in the end because I find it more in line with what I will use it for. It's been an experience I suppose. Most items I buy into I am confident with and get great use out of it. That's not to say I wasnt getting great use out of the Xoom, but like I said, its not much different to me after getting some quality time with it.

This isnt meant to bash the device. I really like it and I already miss it but in the end, it didnt fit my personal needs.

The new generation iPad sticks out to me for many reason, the price is better, the cameras are important to me. I no longer have to sit the kids in front of the Mac to facetime my parents, I can be portable with it. That's a big draw for me, a big draw for any future tablet device.

Face it you want apple because you believe apple users get "more action"

Playbook is going to do very well, since it will combine best of blackberry os with.the ability to run android apps.

Stick with your apple upgrades every 6 months , steve jobs thanks you. Not to mention PT Barnam.

More action? lol. Sure why not.

I do hope RIM hits a homerun with the Playbook but i'm not convinced. Ill be closely watching it though. It's intriguing.

In my opinion, Motorola did themselves a disservice by serving up a 1/2 cooked steak. People have to send them back to finish cooking and that will cause problems in the kitchen! Sorry for the analogy, but it's the truth! Who wants to spend that kind of dough only to package it back up and send it back? Granted it will have LTE but I don't need it on my tablet. Apple prides themselves in "fit to finish" and why mess with a good thing? I love Moto products too, but I will stick with a proven tablet for now and let Xoom finish cooking!

Dude...ignore that type of crap. You were very gung-ho about the device and I respect the fact that you came forward.

These are devices...not religion. Your money is your money and you should be purchasing what YOU like and not due to some loyalty to a company that only views you as a sale. That goes for Apple, Motorola, Samsung, HP, etc..

I don't understand

*Let's keep this civil please, it's all based on personal preference*

Well, I just came back from Best Buy. Returned the Xoom. Funny BB Mobile guy said shortly after the Ipad 2 announcement he got a few calls on the Xoom return policy. We actually both had a laugh.

I was honest with him when he asked why I was returning it. iPad 2.

I can do the same on the iPad 2 (FOR MY PURPOSES) for less money. Granted I am grabbing the 3G version but at 629, its easier on the wallet.

I will miss you Xoom. I really will
Other than Netflix and Facetime, what is it the iPad will do better for you?

I see you keep mentioning "my purposes," but it seems the only two specific criteria I saw that the Xoom lacks are the two I mentioned. In light of FaceTime, I presume this means your parents have a Mac? And if that's the case, I take it that you simply prefer the Apple ecosystem.

For me, I can't say anything about the Xoom because it is overpriced. But, it does beat the iPad/iPad2 in EVERY single spec: http://www.androidcentral.com/ipad-2-versus-honeycomb-and-others

This fact alone would make me waiver a bit on whether it is worth the cost. As one other person mentioned, on contract, the Xoom is techincally a tad cheaper.

If price is really the big show-stopper, and you could possibly live without cameras, I would recommend just getting $199.99 Nook Color and run Honeycomb on it. I have one that I currently run Froyo on and it works flawlessly. Plus I use it all the time. I could equip every member of my family with one of these devices for the price of a single on-contract iPad.

Fair enough, but the xoom is technically $29 cheaper if you sign a contract for the Xoom and pay for 2 years of data for the ipad right?

And some lucky people were able to get it for $600 without contract...would you have kept it if you got it for $600?

I don't think you even have a contract with the iPad unless that has changed.

Thank you. I just wanted to share my take on it. You're right, I was completely gung-ho for this device. I was excited and incredibly anxious for the xoom. But in end it didn't work out for me. :)

I have the Xoom... When I watched the I Pad2 anouncement, I had a knee-jerk reaction to return my Xoom for the cheaper I Pad2. But that only lasted for five minutes. I'm happy and as Steve Jobs pointed out, Apple has more apps than us. But the reason why I like the Android OS over the Apple OS are still the same (Actually I like WebOS over both, but HP is f*cking up). So I'll be evolving with Moto as they work out the bugs (which are not too much that it distracts me), and when I get flash, 4G, and SD capability I'm sure my happiness will hit hyper-drive.
Anyway, the I Pad 2 looks nice. But you should compare the price of both 64 gb devices, and you might see there is no big difference.

Two words(and a number) sums up why the Xoom beats out the iPad2...

...nVidia Tegra 2

Stop and think about the processor alone.. We've already seen it can be OC'd by a ******ed amount.. and all current benchmarks show it blowing through anything else. This new CPU is so powerful.. we literally dont have anything that can push it to it's limits, and you know people are going to be Dev'n for it as the flagship for a while cause lets face it.. it's the N1 of tablets.

Your reasons seems to all point to "well I can do it with my apple just as well" but that's because we've been limited till now... There just isnt anything that can take advantage of it's true potential to show you just what it's truely made of.. But now that it's out.. I bet you will see apps pouring out of the works that will REALLY show you what the Xoom is made out of.

I cant wait for the damn thing to come to Canada.. Hoping it will have all the updates by then :) But I would still buy one tomorrow if I had the $$ in hand and could get it running up here

More power to you. I'm sticking with android and the Xoom. I can't stand ios and the 4:3 form factor.

This was actually one of my gripes with the xoom. I found it too awkward to hold in portrait mode. Withmy ipad I used it almost always in portrait. I missed that. Preference I suppose but I couldn't get used to holding the xoom all the time in landscape.
