Hi--newbie here to the forum and Android. My Fascinate worked fine since I got it last Sept until this last maintenance update a couple weeks ago; then the volume rocker stopped working, I can't get the ringtone settings to open, and the whole thing does a constant soft reboot. I can access the main volume setting. I had no problems with the phone until this last update. Now it randomly and constantly soft reboots, does that media scanning crap, and locks things up.

Phone info:
Hardware v i500.04
Firmware 2.1-update 1
Baseband v S:i500.04 v.EA28
Kernel v 2.6.29
build Number SCH-I500.E28

I don't have task killers, chinese apps, or any mods. (I know, boring; what can I say).

Can anyone help? Anyone? Bueller?

Any advice (other than rooting, which is beyond my understanding and expertise) or information would be very very helpful. Thank you in advance...

If you're not willing to give root a try(and you may want to as there are a lot of good resources and helpful people) then the best advice would probably be take the phone to Verizon to get a warranty replacement.

I was on the EA28 build and hated it. It made my phone slow and sometimes non responsive. I was skeptical about using a custom build for my phone, but I did and happy that I did. If you follow the directions on this post you can't go wrong!

Don't be afraid, it will be worth it! Besides you'll also get rid of all that Verizon crap that's on the phone.

I am running Superclean 2.6 on froyo.

i had my phone for about 2 weeks before i got the gumption to root. and then i bricked my phone, and crapped my pants. then i buckled down did some research and thanks to some of the folks here i got my phone working. if i had the resources available now back then (november) i prolly would not have bricked. its REALLY easy to root and flash a new rom. super easy. and on top of that folks here are always willing to help.

Thanks to those who took the time and replied, but really? Are my only choices get a replacement phone or root? Sounds like the IT fallback, "Reformat your hard drive." Is there no other info on this problem or way to f'ing fix it!!! Very frustrated here.

I dunno; I get interested in rooting, but after starting in on those 238 pages from your linked post, it starts getting more complicated and confusing (CWM red? flash?) I wonder if I want to, what do I lose that I might want? (I use Kindle, Daily Briefing, Swype--love it--Gmail, etc.) Aaacckkk!

in most cases, if its broke, it can be fixzed. its a matter of how much time you want to spen doing something. sometimes its just plain easier to format and reinstall. on this phone however you dont have access to the root account. you dont have access to the whole OS. so you have 2 options, warrenty, or root. its a crappy answer. its also the only answer.

Thank you, Mike--I'm feeling a little more confident in going forward with the root and froyo update. I found a consolidated post in the fascinate forums site that put all those instructions from this site together, so I think I'm gonna go for it {gritting teeth}.. I did see a little video about a Z4Root program that seemed really easy--install, push a button to root (or unroot if needed), and off you go--any thoughts on that one?

And for backup--my contacts are auto-backed to verizon; the only other things I know of to backup are the photos on SD card. Is there anything else I need to save?

One last--will I still have Swype with froyo? TY

Thanks, Mike. I think I'm a little more confident about rooting and getting froyo. I found a post on the FascinateForum.com website that consolidates all the steps on this website, so I think I'm gonna bite the bullet and go for it {gritting teeth}. I also saw a video about using a program called Z4Root which seemed really easy--install, push a button to root (or unroot if needed), and off you go. Your thoughts?

Also, my contacts are auto-backed to verizon; the only other thing I know of to back up are my SD photos. Is there anything else I need to save? I assume I'll have to just make a list of my apps and redownload those after froyo installs, yes?

Thank you again for your time--really really appreciate it :-)

Last, will I still have Swype on froyo? I love that...

no, you are making it more complicated than it needs to be. check this out:

make sure you download MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service. this the super clean 2.8. put phone in download mode, flash with odin. done. thats it. 2 steps. one of which is downloading the rom. couldnt be easier.

You will indeed have swype in Froyo, and yes, it's awesome!

You don't need to backup anything on your SD card as rooting the phone doesn't touch the SD card.

If you want to save your apps, after you root your phone download a backup app like titanium backup, use it to backup your apps and app data and then after you flash to Froyo re-download TB and reload your apps and app data

sd card wont need to be backed up. contacts backed up to gmail. sorry missed that part.

Oops--forgot to do this titanium backup thingy. Oh well; at least I did make a list of them before froyo-ing. And then I'll dl titanium.
Thanks to all of you, esp GunnerMike and wyllic!! Couldn't have done it alone...

Forgot to post in the previous one that all was successful-am now running froyo, according to phone info (firmware 2.2.1, baseband s:i500.04 v.EB01, kernel 2.6.32.9, bld SCH-I500.EB01).
Woo-hoo!
