Fascinate source code is now out

I think Samsung really has a respect for the development/hacking community. Releasing the source as soon as we asked and giving us phones with the bootloader already unlocked. We thank you Samsung.

Releasing the source code is part of the licensing agreement with Google. Other words, its a requirement.

However, having an unlocked bootloader isnt. So thank you, Samsung.

No, it hasn't been updated. We weren't given the ramdisk, so we've been using an extracted one from a stock system, but after compiling that into the rev02 kernel we can't get it to boot.

I think people are starting to lean toward going with a koush-like method of hijacking the bootloader now. We'll get there, it's just going to take time.

Source Code, Please help!!

Thanks for all help with the official requests everyone. For those who would like it, Samsung released the Fascinate source code earlier this evening.

So now that the source code is out what does one do with it? Im starting to catch on to the hacking thing, was able to root, lag fix, etc... with no problems but still dont really understand what makes up the source coude. I downloaded the files which are named as follows:

3d_module_GPL.tar
SCH-I500_OpenSource_kernel.tar
SCH-I500_OpenSource_platform.tar

What would one do with these files? Are these the files that would truly bring one's phone back to stock, or are they something entirely different??

What makes these .tar files different from the .tar file that was posted in the "back to stock" thread. Just trying to understand. I had posted something simlar in "going back to stock" with no luck, so I'm hoping someone see's this.

Unless you are a developer, you don't do anything with these files.

lol..

Let me start out by saying that I have the greatest respect for anyone wishing to learn new things, and who takes the time to ask questions and work hard. Believe me when I say that I'm in no way trying to be rude.. However, if you're unsure what to do with the files, there's a lot more you need to learn before they're useful to you.

If you're familiar with linux, can get a distro up (preferably ubuntu, but anything should work) on a vm, dual-boot, etc.. and are ok using apt to grab packages, and git for source repository, then you're probably to the point where someone in IRC can help walk you through how to compile the kernel. Just jump on #samsung-fascinate on freenode and hang out.

If you're unsure how to do any (or most) of that, I'd start with some linux forums (ubuntu forums are a good starting point), and try and get a linux install up and running first, and go from there.

No, definitely not rude....... That was exactly the answer I was looking for, and probably something I should hold off on playing with . Thanks for pointing me in the right direction should I decide to spend the time on it......

I just re-read my post and realize that I did come off as being very rude. My apologies. It didn't occur to me that you may be interested in getting into development. In that case namebrandon is spot on, the best place to start is becoming familiar with Linux.

Of course in my case I should have paid more attention to my programming classing in College, but in my defense they were early in the morning...
