I am having huge battery drains with the Facebook app while it is idle on my new S4. For some reason the app seems to be using anywhere between 30-60% of the battery while the phone is idle making it so that I am losing about 10% of battery every 30 minutes or so. I have done almost everything I can think of to try and stop this from happening... I have the GPS off, set the refresh interval to never as well as turned off notifications but that seems to have not fixed the problem. I also have cleared the data/cache in hoping that would also fix the issue for me. Force stopping the app also seems to not help me from preventing this battery drain.

However, on my old HTC Thunderbolt I would have my notifications active, refresh interval set at every 1 hour, GPS on and I never had the Facebook app drain the battery while idle this badly. The most I ever saw Facebook take was about 5-10% of the battery while being idle.

Is there anything that I can do to fix this besides just completely removing the app?

there are a bunch of tasks that the fb app does when its idle. you need to go into the setting of the application and turn most of the stuff off. its a lot i recall

Turn of FB notifications within the app itself
Open FB, then hit the menu button and turn off notifications

You sure it's Facebook who drain your battery? Or just guessing?
You can try greenify app to hibernate FB, but require root. Or just use other Facebook app. Most available app are better than official one anyway.

I have everything selected to be turned off and it is still managing to be using the most of the battery even when it is idle.

I am pretty positive that it is Facebook that is causing this. It seems that the Facebook app isn't just being nice to my GS4. I went into the Facebook app and turned off the chat, refresh interval, messenger location services, disabled sync photos and have notifications off and it still is just draining the battery.

What I don't understand is why it is doing this as I have the Facebook app installed to my old HTC Thunderbolt, Galaxy Tab 10.1 and those have never had this app drain the battery like this. Both of those devices are usually around 2% battery drain from the Facebook app and they have the notifications turned on.

i would un-install it. reboot phone and watch battery. re-install and see if that helped

After uninstalling and rebooting I have noticed that my battery has increased significantly. Is there any way that I can get the Facebook app to work without draining the battery like it was doing? I find it extremely odd that I can have everything turned off for the app and still have it drain my battery like crazy while it is not in use. I will try to re-install it later and see if works without the draining, but I won't be holding my breath.

Does this mean that I have a problem with the phone or is it just the app? I just got the phone on Saturday from Verizon. Like I said before I have the app installed on two other devices and it doesn't drain the battery like it has been doing on my S4. Would a factory reset fix the problem if I have the same issue after I try to re-install the app?

I'd reinstall the app now

This happens often where an app needs to be uninstalled reinstalled to work properly.

Sent from my amazing Samsung Galaxy S4... there is none better!

Okay, I'll install it and give it a shot to see if I can get it to work properly this time.

Since re-installing the app my battery has started to drain fast again. It started off at 2% and is now at 10% before I had to plug my phone back in to charge it. I have no ideas left on what to do to fix this issue besides just uninstalling the app and leaving it off completely.

Maybe an app keep connecting to fb app. For example, my htc has an app named "facebook for htc sense", i think this app connect the gallery to fb account, not sure, but i disable it anyway, and doesnt loose any function with facebook that i know of.

My suggestion is to find out if there is a S4 app that related to fb in someway, probably that what caused fb keep using the cpu, therefore, battery.

The only other thing I noticed was that under the Accounts tab in settings is two different Facebook selections. One was the standard Facebook and the other was something called Apps for Facebook but I had both of them checked to not sync. When I was in Facebook I saw a thing under app's called Galaxy S4 as well as my older HTC Sense and I couldn't remove either of those within the Facebook app itself.

No matter how much I try to stop it from running it seems to always finds a way to start back up. Notifications off, location off, chat off, force stop, stopping the background processes its doing, killing the app with the task manager and it still seems to find a way to drain the battery while staying idle.

The only other thing I can think of that is causing this issue is of a bug in the touchwiz software that I have seen. What happens is that when the phone goes sleep my wifi turns off(I have it selected to never turn off) and goes to 3g. When I wake the phone back up it then finds my WiFi and connects back to it. I am pretty sure this is a glitch in the phone because the same WiFi problem occurs on my fathers GS4 as well.

You can try uninstall facebook and then freeze/disable all facebook related apps that still exist on phone. Then reinstall facebook. And see if the drain still happen.

You can remove app permission on facebook full website, on privacy option, For htc sense and gs, or to make sure just delete all, you can approve permission later when you reinstall facebook App.
