February Security Update

Re: February security update

You can always manually download and install, if you are impatient. A couple of reasons I've heard for the slow rollouts are 1) that Google rolls out the updates to minimize any slow down of their servers, as well as to keep networks from being slowed and 2) if a problem not caught in testing is found, Google can suspend the update before a majority of users have an update that "kills" their phone.

but if one manually downloads the update, wouldn't that prevent him from future OTA updates and he would always have to do them manually?

Re: February security update

They usually roll out fully in about 2 weeks. If you don't want to wait, then flash the factory image. Your comparing waiting 2 weeks to waiting 1/3 - 1/4 of year for Samsung roll outs..... Dude get a grip.

No, it makes no difference.

Although most people who update manually never get another OTA, it's just because once they know how they never wait on Google again.

I think I'll learn to be happy waiting up to a couple weeks for the OTA update rather than flash a factory image and start from scratch every single month.

You can easily unzip the factory image and update without wiping by flashing the components individually or editing the batch file to remove the wipe command.

It isn't very difficult.

ditto, not that you're missing anything really, I mean I haven't seen reports that it fixes any bugs. I know security is important, but we will survive if we wait a few more days/weeks.

I know, I'm not happy about this, but I would rather not tinker with the phone like that to flash individual components and I certainly don't want to wipe my phone everytime a new update comes out.

You don't need to wipe device every time you flash. Hehehehe. Why do you do that?

Why even go to the trouble of flashing the update? Seems like a PITA. Not like it takes months like carrier phones. I got mine a couple of days ago.

Backup Issues after the February Security Patch

Seems like this "Security Patch" packs an issue with backups with it. After updating, I needed to perform a factory reset on the phone. Opted to turn off backups and was greeted with the usual "data would be deleted on Google Drive as well" line.

Problem is, after setting up fingerprints, it now gives me an option to restore my data. Which is quite odd since turning backup off should have deleted whatever was backed up. It never was like this before the February "Security Patch".

Finally got the updated just now! Now I can enjoy life without having to worry about an updated that I don't have! It messed up my OCD

Still waiting here myself -- should be here in a few days. I always seem to be around mid-month :).

for the January update I got it on the 15th of Januar.

Try this bro, shutdown your phone then boot into recovery mode, clear your cache then reboot again.

Then disconnect WiFi and try searching again, that's how I got it

I waited until today and finally gave in and did the old set the date forward thing. Then I got it, set date back, and then after the update, got the notification for it again 2 times, reinstalled twice. Now not getting the notification any more.

Anyone with the LTE issues notice an improvement afterwards?

Wasn't there an article that said cache clearing could mess up the update cycle on your phone?

No I believe it was clearing Google services framework that causes issues. If anything clearing your cache benefits your user experience.

Nothing this morning, 18 hours it's updating...

I hope it fixes at least the LTE issue. I'm also hoping the Bluetooth as well. LOL

This. Clearing your cache is absolutely fine (although the once every two days someone mentioned is way too often, and will actually slow the phone and use more data/battery).

Clearing data on Google services framework does work for forcing an update, but it will also screw your device up pretty nicely.
