Feeling like 3G is killing my battery more than it should.

I went through the day , 8 hours, with 80% battery left, which is great. I did some internet search, disabling 3g when ever I was done with it. Some texting... But then , on my way back from work in the bus, I've been using 3g and internet browser for about 15-20 minutes, and my battery went from 80% down to 65% Almost 1% a minute drain) Is it normal??

Yesterday, my friend used his gs3 for like 45 minutes with 25% higher brightness on youtube non-stop. he dropped like 15% if not 10%. + he always keep 3G open.

How is he doing this? I don't get it..

Is something wrong with my 3g? or 3g settings?

Different carriers?
You could have weaker signal and more towers along your journey so the phone has to keep tuning into the next one?
