FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited data

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I use about 3 a month 4 at most.
Spin it how you want say what you want but unlimited has a definition and like it or not that's what it means.

Spin what? Has Verizon canceled anyone's unlimited contract? Not that I'm aware of. Unlimited still means unlimited. They're letting the moron I know use 150GB a month streaming movies when no one's around. Getting those people off unlimited is a win for VZ. Getting them to go to Sprint is a win-win.

Unlimited is going away for a reason and the abusers are a big part of it.

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I am complaining loudly and I use 6-8 a month. I don't use my phone at home and I cannot use it ona wifi at my main job.

My complaint is not just a me me me situation. The tiered plans will save a lot of people a lot of money. So I think they are a great idea. However there is no thought for the single user that uses more than 4GB but less than 10GB. They are forcing me to buy more or change my usage. In 3-4 years a tiered plan may be a good call for me if my wife wants a smartphone and my son comes of age where I am ok with him having one. Until than they are making changes based on a few people that use the phones (as Verizon would say) not their intended purpose. This leads me also to say this is their fault. They made the phones capable of so much and when people utilize them so they punish us.

I'm complaining too, but I'm not yelling "Unlimited means unlimited!" on every forum while I use my cell phone as my home internet connection and using stealth programs to mask my usage.

And I'm more annoyed because they're taking unlimited it away from everyone rather than just those that are the top abusers.

In every system there are abusers. The term "unlimited" was a poor choice for the carriers. They're correcting that now. Welcome to the new era of shared, capped and tiered data plans.

Then, they will have options. Tiered data, another carrier or no cell phone. It's not the end of the world.

Shhhhhh, don't say that to loud. If to many people complain they can't afford a cell phone they will convince some politician they are entitled to one and the next thing you know our tax dollars will be paying a cell phone bill for everyone that wants one but doesn't want to pay for it.

I'm waiting for my tv to get stolen and the police to shrug their shoulders telling it my contribution to those that can't afford a TV of my size. Than I get a voucher for a ffree McDonald's ice cream cone to compensate me.

Welfare recipients already get cell phones paid for by your tax dollars, just so you know.

You are 100 percent correct Verizon has the right to do away with unlimited data and put whatever plans they want in place. But the plain fact is they called it unlimited so until they change the plans its still unlimited even if some Joe schmo wants to use 500 in a month. Spin it how you want say what you want but unlimited has a definition and like it or not that's what it means. Personally no more data than the wife and I use shared plans in reality probably won't hurt us at all, for what we will share for 60 bucks which is what we pay now.
The thing you can't change no matter how much you don't agree with it is the fact that until Verizon changes it everyone does have the right to use as much data as they want.

Definitions are one thing, but practical consumption is another. Just because it's called "unlimited" doesn't mean you consume as much as possible without consequence or regard for how it may impact others. That's just gluttony whether it's a cellular data plan or food buffet or what have you. It speaks to a lack of self control or consideration for how your actions may affect others.

Also, I disagree that it's a right, rather it's a privilege you're paying for. As such if you abuse it, you may lose it. Verizon reserves that right.

Like I stated earlier I don't abuse my data,I don't tether and I use wifi at home. All I'm saying is Verizon created the problem by offering a data plan defined as unlimited.
Seeing as how Verizon charges extra to tether do I thinks its right to cheat the system mask your use with an app or by some other means ? No, I don't. Obviously if its a separate plan Verizon doesn't consider it a part of your unlimited plan. If you want to use your phone to watch 3 movies a day and stream music the rest of the time and it uses alot of data is that wrong? No, because Verizon billed you for a plan offering unlimited data.

Isn't this what Verizon is doing? They are not taking unlimited data away from anyone under a current contract. As long as you pay for your current contract with Verizon that has unlimited data you can keep unlimited data.

Now if you decide you want to upgrade your phones through Verizon this will require a change to the contract. The old contract will be gone and a new contract with different options will be required. If you don't want a different contract then don't make changes and don't upgrade your phones through Verizon. You can then keep your old contract as long as you keep paying the bill.

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I have an old Droid X (3G) on a completely independent line (under contract until next year). My biggest fear is that by the time my contract runs out, VZ will not let me switch to a 4G phone even if I get it from and outside vendor.... Do you guys see this happening? Or am I just freaking out for nothing?

They will let you upgrade to a 4g phone but by that time there will be no unlimited data plans. You'll just have a data cap. For now this can be circumvented by buying a new phone at full price.

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I use a lot of data because I spend a lot of time at airports and I just watch movies on my phone. I don't want to pay for wifi at the airport. I also stream a lot of music since I do not get wifi while driving an hour to work and an hour back home from work.

Expect to buy your next phone at full price or used.

Cheat the system. I believe cheating is unethical last time I checked... And would be why Verizon is killing the unlimited plan. If people truly used all that data on just their phone it would be one thing, but most people that are using tons of data tether, which is cheating the system and not what Verizon agreed to in their contract with you.

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I can see the carrier's point of view for unlimited users.

But really, on tiered plans, data is data and none of them should be charging extra to tether.

I don't do the tethering thing but I couldn't agree more. If you pay a set amount for a set amount of data you should be able to use it any way you desire.

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

Okay, since they are forcing everyone off the unlimited data plans... how does it work if you have the $20 off of the unlimited data plans? Both of my lines are $20 off so we're only paying $10 a month for each phone.. will they still honor that towards the tiered plans?

I know 8 pages of thread discussion is a lot to comb through, but they are not forcing anyone to do anything. You keep your plan as long as you don't upgrade at a discount. Of course this hasn't gone in to effect yet.

Re: FierceWireless: Verizon will kill 'grandfathered' unlimited d

I read mostly through it... and while it's not a complete "force off" it is for me because we won't buy new phones. We always do the contract to help offset the price for the phones. So, I ask again, what will happen with the $20 promotion that we get towards each of our plans for data? Will we be able to keep it?

Also, I know this doesn't hold much water, but the guy in Verizon knew about it and said parts of it had already started and that by July they were going to start weaning everyone off of it. The phone guy in Best Buy on the other hand said by the end of the year. I'm just trying to prepare for what I need to do before/when the time comes. I know that you can't listen to what they are saying which is why I'm keeping an eye out here to see "official" information pop up about it. Just looking at my options.

Answering again- you will lose it if you upgrade.

As I understand it, if you upgrade at all you will loose unlimited data. Yes, even if you buy a used phone and upgrade that way. The only two ways not to loose unlimited data are,...... 1 never upgrade, and or 2 buy phone at full price. Verizon knows that if they allow folks to buy used and still keep unlimited data, their phone sales will go down, due to used sales going up.
As for data, I use anywhere from 5-7 gigs a month. I do not tether. I am always using Internet on my phone.. My data would go from 30 bucks a month to about 50-60 bucks a month for the same amount of data. Crazy
