File transfer from phone to SD card not working

I have an HTC one E8. I'm kinda new to the file manager app. Since HTC doesn't come with a file manager I installed Es file manager. I like the app it's pretty neat but then I can't use it to transfer files from phone memory to SD card. My phone is running kitkat 4.4.2. When I try to transfer it says "you need to root the phone to perform this task".
Please help.

Hi there. KitKat changed the way SD Cards can be accessed in your phone. Basically, only system apps have full read/write permissions. 3rd party apps, like ES File explorer, cannot modify SD Card contents it didn't create, which is why you'd need root to gain that ability back. Unfortunately, if the M8 doesn't come with a stock File Manager, that would be the only non-rooted way to gain full access to the SD card.

Try connecting the phone to a PC and see if you can manage the file copying from there.

Yes I can manage the SD card from the pc. But then that's not a very convenient way to do it right.. So in the M8 that's running lollipop can this task be done by a 3rd party file manager? Thanks for the quick reply.
