Fingerprint Scanner Not Working Well

I recall the intent was to release it in the S8

That was the intent. And it wasn't ready. And I'm pretty sure Samsung never officially announced it for a specific phone. But as I'm sure you know, you can test and test until you're blue in the face...and real world usage can still kick you in the butt.

And tech savvy people, you'd think we of all people would get that. I dare anyone to name a company that hasn't experienced this.

They are really lucky they got most of them fixed with the update because "moisturizer-gate" would have been just too easy for the media to talk about.

Spot on throttleman

Samsung is pretty good about addressing early software issues. I'd expect another update to resolve sensor issues with phones not turning off in pockets and so forth.

Although I know it's not much consolation to folks who just agreed to pay a grand for a phone, but early adoption always comes with risk.

Well, today my week change from the sensor being flawless, to acting up and not working well with my fingers. If I lick one, and dry it off, and then try, it works for a while. Interesting how it worked absolutely with no issues for me since I got the phone, till now having issues today.

Yeah that is the opposite of the pattern experienced by most. The phone shipped like that for many - people started making up crazy ways to get it to work - they updated about two days in - things went well for most. That's odd for sure.

Uh... Could it... Possibly... Be... User error?

I work in IT and I can tell you 90% of the time it's not the hardware it's the user.

LOL, couldn't resist. :p

Same here, was working perfect yesterday and today it's complete trash. What gives?

I'm still going to swap out my phone, because it's not updating to the current version. My account has already been noted. Here's the kicker: NONE of the corporate stores in my area of Michigan have the 128 or 512 GB phones...in any color. Can't order the 128 GB online either, in Prism Black. So now I gotta decide what I'm going to do, before the 21st. The 512 GB is available online to order, as of this morning.

I want a brand new phone, and as long as I order or get to a store before the 14 days are up, I can get one. After that, it's a warranty replacement, which could be a refurbished model.

I'll decide when I pay my bill on Tuesday.

While good advice, I will point out that it the software needs you to register your prints in a specific way, but does not require you to do so, that is a problem.

This is what people don't get. That's why I can't stand the condescending remarks. The ONLY way I've gotten the FPS to work consistently is by using the technique in the video someone posted here where you scan BOTH thumbprints for one profile. How would I have known that was the answer?

I haven't had to do that as described in the video and after watching the video I tried it to confirm. There is no difference in device reaction for me whether I program one finger per slot or two per slot twice. I also don't think everyone here is being condescending. Many are just posting their own personal experience. Are there condescending posts here?...of course, because some can't help themselves instead of just being helpful. Sometimes we have to take the good with the bad.

Interesting... you learn something new every day. I just read your post and finally watched that video to see what it meant by one profile... I can't believe it's taking 16 different scans!

I always thought that each input was building a more accurate ONE file of your print. You'd think that's the smarter thing to do. I even tried it on my iPad and it works on that too (even though I almost never have a miss on an Apple sensor).

Interesting somehow it works for many... but honestly I think that it's just temporary. You just re-registered and it's gonna have a fresh image of your finger and the condition of the finger today so of course it would work (whether on the dry side, a little moist, etc). The real test is in a few days.

To me, this technique might in theory sound faster since it has less images to go through. But I also think that if there are slight variances per scan, you now have 8 less scans of one print to find a match. That's why on the flip side people recommend registering the same finger 2-3-4 times... so that you have 32-48-64 possible images to give you a match to get in. His tip is for speed... not accuracy.

I wonder how it continues to learn with further unlocks... saves more images?

Very interesting learn though.

I didn't say everyone was condescending, because I don't think that. I just mentioned condescending remarks.

It doesn't continue to learn with further unlocks. There are some systems that do but not this one.

Face recognition is so fast that I barely use the fps anymore even though its not as secure.
