Fingerprint sensor sometimes stops working

LG G4 happens more and more often. A restart of the phone fixes it. Is there a soft reset available? Seems obvious this is a software issue, not hardware, since restarts make it work again.

rcpa. For me it was a problem with SIM PIN codes!

I have a dual SIM G6 H870DS. I also noticed that sometimes the fingerprint unlock wasn't available although the sensor was correctly recognising my fingers during the setup process so it wasn't the sensor. I dont usually have both SIMs active at the same time. I have a SIM lock code enabled on SIM2 but not on SIM1. I eventually discovered that if that SIM2 has had a wrong pin code entered and I have used up any of my 3 attempts before needing the PUK code then fingerprint unlock is unavailable.

Obviously The SIM PIN count is not automatically reset with reboot so I spend ages and ages mucking about until a "what if" moment made me unlock the second SIM. Fingerprint unlock was instantly available again. Problem solved.

So I can have the SIM enabled or with all 3 unlock attempts left but not with just one or two attempts left. I don't really see why the fingerprint unlock and SIM lock should be tied together like that but at least on my dual SIM they are. I'm on Oreo now but I believe this is what was causing me occasional problems on Nougat too.

My phone's fingerprint scanner abruptly stopped working and its not responding at all not even the haptic feedback. Anyone with any ideas what i can do, i have tried deleting apps as i had seen on other forums and rebooting but nothing works. I cannot even reset the fingerprint once i go to the fingerprint settings it doesn't allow me to reset or delete the fingerprints its unresponsive.

I'm having the same problem lately with my LG G5, where the fingerprint scanner just seems to completely quit functioning. I tried to scan another fingerprint into it, and it wasn't picking up anything at all, it just seems to shut down. Restarting the phone usually gets it working again, but sometimes not for long.

I'm also using Nova Launcher, however I've been using it for the last 2.5 years on this phone without any issues. It's just the last month or so that the scanner seems to stop functioning. So I really don't think Nova can be blamed at all. I'm thinking it's more of a hardware issue going bad.
