Fingerprint sensor sometimes stops working

I've had three different occasions so far where the fingerprint sensor just stopped working. And it's not that it stops recognizing my fingerprint, but rather that it stops doing anything. Normally, if you touch it and it fails to recognize your figerprint, it give two quick vibrations. But occasionally, it stops responding at all. You touch it and nothing happens. They only way I've gotten it to work again was to reboot the phone.

One of the times it happened, it failed to recognize my fingerprint about 6 times in a row, and then just stopped responding at all. A few minutes ago, I picked up my phone and it just didn't respond to my touch.

Now that I think about it, when I turned on the screen with double-tap, it popped up the passcode keypad, which it shouldn't have done because my watch is set up as a trusted device. But even after entering the passcode and then turning off the screen, it wouldn't respond to my touch on the fingerprint sensor.

I've also had some times when the smart lock with my trusted devices and trusted location stopped working. Maybe these are related.

(I've also had issues with smart lock not working with my G3 too)

Im not sure if I've experienced that

That's weird. My experience is that the fingerprint sensor is fast and works every time.

Seeing as you've also had issues with your G3, you may need to play detective and start by closely looking at your settings and apps. Good luck!

I'm having issues with the fingerprint sensor too. But for me it might be due to using Nova Launcher. If i turn off the phone with the power button, I can wake it with the fingerprint sensor. But if I turn it off with double tap, I can't use the fingerprint sensor to turn it on. Anyone else have this problem?

Hi all,

I had this problem too and it took me a while to figure it out, i use action launcher and set it to lock the screen with a triple tap (which i thought would just turn the screen off and allow we to unlock with the fingerprint sensor). The issue for me was that this function by the launcher literally locks the phone rather than just turning off the screen and the fingerprint sensor basically doesn't respond (as it can only be unlocked with a pin or whatever you have set).

There is no screen based option that I've found other than a double tap on the notification bar (drag it down and then double tap in the empty space to the right of the time/date) that turn the screen off and allow you to unlock with the fingerprint sensor.

Hope this makes sense ?

If the scanner fails to recognize your print to many times then it locks you out of the ability to use it until you unlock it with you backup method. When you're locked out of the scanner it will not vibrate but if you look at the bottom of the lock screen it will tell you unable to use fingerprint use ( insert method).

Orbital is correct. This is the same with any 3rd-party launcher. In order to unlock your phone with the fingerprint scanner, the phone must have been locked by one of the following methods:

  • Double-tap on empty area of stock LG home screen
  • Double-tap on notification bar
  • Press the power button

Using any 3rd party launcher's method of locking the phone will NOT allow you to unlock with the fingerprint scanner.

I'm having this issue as well. The fingerprint sensor from powered off screen will unlock and power on the screen fine for a few hours, then it just stops working. I checked in Settings - > Fingerprint and Security and the sensor will recognize my fingerprints fine there. Power off the screen, no response to fingerprint unlock. Very strange.

I too use Bluetooth Smart lock for a small headset I use. I also use Apex Launcher for my 3rd party launcher.

Thats happened to me too. The finger sensor not working. i freaked out for a bit but it just needed to be cleaned.

One thing I've noticed, is that if the proximity sensor thinks its against your ear, it turns the fingerprint sensor off. The only time i've had the fingerprint sensor fail to respond at all, I realised the always on screen was actually off, because my other hand was quite near the proximity sensor and the room was very dark. Other than that, works perfectly, very fast fingerprint detect. I actually ended up redoing my fingerprints, and if you move you finger around (As it actually tells you on the screen, which I didn't read properly first time), it is even better at unlocking first time.

My Galaxy s7 edge was experiencing the same exact problem, all I did was turn off Bluetooth and everything was back to normal

Same here....just started happening. Appears to be a hardware issue. I cannot register a new finger on the fingerprint settings. It doesn't recognize that anything is touching the sensor at all.

I just recently noticed a similar problem with my lg stylo 2. I had shut off the password for about 20 minutes and when I went to go out my password back and put my fingerprint back now it just says "enrollment was not completed. Try again or use a different finger" without giving me a chance to try to scan my finger. Can anyone help??
