First Android phone question.

I received my Droid X yesterday and Ive pretty much gotten everything figured out but Gmail. I'm coming from a BB Storm and with the BB when I deleted mail it gave me the choice of deleting from just the phone or both the phone and the main Gmail account. With my X when I delete from the phone it always deletes from the main account as well. Am I overlooking a way to stop this or is this just the way Gmail works with a Android phone? Any help that anyone can give to a new Droid owner will be greatly welcomed!

The only way I can think of to not have gmail sync is to enable POP access and set it up as a POP account. That, however, comes with its caveats, of course.
