First full review,By Wirefly

i'm curious to see if there are any ways to view the videos or pics by 3rd party because of their proprietary (or unique) file association/extensions. the 3d video he posted was just basically a split screen video. :oS

There is nothing proprietary about .mpo files as they are effectively the de-facto standard for 3D images and used by a range of devices including the Nintendo 3DS. There are several different programs available to view them, including on 2D screens using anaglyph glasses, and convert them back to .jpg.

Great review. I'm starting to get a little hype over this device. Sucks that my upgrade isn't until Sept/Oct. and by then, another device may be looming.

"the 3d video he posted was just basically a split screen video"

So I'm wondering if some 3D videos I have can be played by simply changing the extension to .mpo (assuming it's in a format that the phone can play in the first place).

Because he didn't mention video format (and was able to pull it directly into the video he made for youtube), I have to assume it was .mpg (or some other common format). That "split screen video" is called side-by-side, and it's the way all 3D video content is handled. Your bluray player would send that to your TV and then your TV would work some processing magic to display it as necessary (same with the phone). It's the same with Youtube 3D except you can select many different viewing formats.

EDIT: The .mpo files are the standard for 3D images, not movies. Wanted to clarify :)

is it just a container file w/ two video streams? Cause I'd just record everything in 3D if I can pull a single stream out of it later (assuming I wasn't going for straight to youtube).

FYI guys, I just watched the wirefly video using the youtube app on my 3D tv.

At the part where he shows the 3D video that looks side by side, I hit the 3D button on my remote and selected the side by side 3D option.

It worked! The video showed in 3D!

If you have a 3D tv, and want to see how the 3D video cameras on the Evo 3D record, it works.

If any of you get your hands on an Evo 3D, upload some more 3D videos please. That one was pretty short, but it did prove that it works. So the more we get, the better we can gauge the performance.

I'm honestly not sure on that point. That's a great question. From my experience putting my 3D blurays into side-by-side videos on my computer, it would seem they are stitched together, and each side of the video is half the horizontal resolution. So with some video editing software, I'm sure you could crop the video to one side and then stretch it out to get the single stream. If it was two streams in one container, it would be much easier (like you are saying).

...should see about a 15% improvement on the battery vs the EVO
Because the battery capacity is 15% larger than the EVO? Anyone have any idea how the different screen and processor would affect power consumption? Like many others, I love the EVO but to the battery life [while better with 2.3, especially in idling mode] is still the weakest link in this phone. I might consider upgrading if the battery life is the same, but not if it's any worse.

Well the asynchronous dual core processor, made from a smaller chip size than the Evo 4G, should make for a lot of battery life savings. This is countered by the higher resolution screen, which will use more processing power to draw all the pixels. I don't know that they will cancel out, but I think it will be close.

The other concern is how 3D content will affect battery life. My opinion is that 3D videos and pictures will not affect battery life any differently than their 2D counterparts. This is because you aren't using any more pixels for the 3D content (you have 2 sides that are each half the horizontal resolution). Playing 3D games and recording 3D videos/pictures may have a negative impact on battery life. For games, the processor will have to work harder to dynamically generate 2 views of the same content, but I would imagine game developers will optimize this to use as few extra resources as possible. For videos/pictures, it may have some affect because you are taking 2 pictures at once and the sensor and processor have to deal with all the information. But the 3D capture forces a lower resolution, so it may not be any worse than recording at the highest 2D resolutions.

Lastly, I don't think the parallax barrier will have any noticeable impact on battery life. It's just an LCD like in your old solar powered calculators. It doesn't do anything fancy, just turns on for 3D, off for 2D. The power to maintain that is pretty trivial compared to everything else you're doing :)

I'm not too worried about the battery, because I plug my phones up in the car, home and office.

I am not too worried about battery life. I wont be doing too much of 3d stuff, afterall this is the biggest battery HTC has put on their android phone.
