First impressions

Every phone forum has a "battery" thread..... every... single.... one....

For each one I've tried... the common belief was usually overblown...

The s6 battery is good... first hand experience.... but I don't sit there staring at my screen for 6 hrs of my day.... wtf are people doing by spending 1/3 of the day on the phone.... I'll give the benefit of the doubt to those few who make 6 figures on their phone.. but they are rare....

Here`s the thing you are overlooking. 6 hours screen on time ensures you make it to the end of the day and into the next day. It doesn't mean you sit in front of your phone for 6 hours a day staring at your screen necessarily, even though you could do that. It means you can have 3-4 hours a day in screen on time and be left with 30-40 percent battery left with moderate to heavy use at 10-11:00pm. Only having 3-4 hours on screen time total means by early evening or late afternoon you may need to charge your phone.

Which I had available to me on my s6.... so the "widespread" battery "issues" doesn't affect most users.... you can't logically come to that sole conclusion just because you read forums.... all you're doing is reading the vocal displeased few and so it seems there's a battery issue....

in my experience, it's user error.... and this is where people get defensive... they'll say "I've been on android for 6 yrs..." or I've had all the galaxy phones..... sorry, but that doesn't give you some PhD on battery life on android... it's most likely user error.... either playing with the phone extra long because it's new... or not understanding what it takes to power a qhd display.... or maybe something going wrong during the backup/restore process.... maybe, it IS a quirk in the new os... I'm not saying that's not a possibility....

All I'm saying is you can not disregard a product simply by going on what you've read... first hand experience is ALWAYS more accurate....

User error? Reviews go both ways. I see some great battery life stats I have no chance of getting and I see horrible ones. I reserve judgement until I actually get the phone, which I now have so I don't know what you are trying to say. I didn't make up my mind about this phone until I personally used it. I gather information from others but I don't base it on that. Based on my usage the phone battery is mediocre, and no it's not user error. You str starting to sound like Steve Jobs telling me I sm holding it wrong.

Yes... you're right... I did quote you in the response.... but if you follow the conversation from the beginning, my comments started from marks original statement... you just happened to join and make other points.... and then got defensive when I was originally talking about marks statement...

So calm down nerd.... and learn how a conversation works...

Sites like GSMArena run battery tests using the same test conditions across all phones. So when their tests show that the M9 or the S6 has worse battery life than the M8, it has nothing to do with user error. Granted everyone sets up and uses their phones differently and some are better or more careful about maximizing battery than others. But standardized tests are standardized tests. No user error involved there.

And obviously hands on experience is more valuable than what you read, but unfortunately if there are several prospective phones you are looking at buying, you can't get hands on experience with all of them, aside from playing with it for a few minutes in a store. You need to have a phone for at least several days before you can start to draw conclusions about battery life. So reading about it is pretty much the only way to decide. You say you are getting good battery life on your S6. That's great. Two guys on another thread just posted that they returned the S6 and got M9's because the S6 battery life was so bad. So obviously there are issues there. Yes you have to take into account there will be outliers on the forums, but when a growing chorus is posting the same thing....where there's smoke there's usually fire.

Edit: LOL....I was replying to joewoo, quoted the wrong post.

Nerd? Uh huh. A lot of name calling for someone who doesn't even know who he is talking too. Literally and figuratively.

Well Im back with an update. Been crazy around here getting boats in the water...

On the battery life gig. Its not crazy low like my G1 and only half of what I was getting out of my Z3. Its somewhat in the middle of what ive been used to. Some mornings I have 20% while others I have 40% ( I charge in the morning obviously ). I spend most of the screen time actually talking to peeps and only about 1-2 hrs on line ( LTE mostly ). I also use the bluetooth connected to a portable speaker all the time ( does not overheat when playing for hours on bluetooth ). So yea..its not like my Z3 where I would look at the battery level every couple days..but it gets the job done on a daily basis for me.

Call quality and reception ( T-Mobile ) is better than the Z3 so far. Im still waiting for them to put up/convert a tower on their newer frequency so I can get reception in these dam metal buildings though.

The thing does get hotter than what im used to ( its in a tech21 gel-like case ). I dont watch flix on it or pushed the cpu that much however.

I guess the UI is ok. Whats with the small red missed calls deal !? I cant see the number when its in Red for Petes sake! I alo liked having the recent calls and dialer on the same page. There are some nice changes compared to the Z3. I like being able to see notes on my lock screen and swipe them away. I still like the Z3 UI better though. I dont know if its the Android version..or the UI..but while text to speech I would have an option to 'delete' recent converted text. Not with the M9 though. If autocorrect messed up somewhere I am having to manually backspace to delete. If anyone knows where the setting to allow me to delete the recent text please let me know.

Sound is friggin awesome. I was showing someone what the sound was like on this puppy ( started up Hotel California )..when the track started the gal behind the desk literally startled in her seat lol. Its loud and crisp coming from a phone I grant you.. especially if you have a good recording.

Pics are good for what I need..not the best but good enough.

Honestly not a bad phone. But I think the deal breaker is gonna be the lack of water proof/resistance. There were several times in the past where I would be working outside while the Z1/3 was on the hood of my truck and it started to rain/drizzle. Ok no problem. But just last week I was bottom painting this boat and it started to drizzle/rain. I ended up getting a bit of paint on the case. No big deal but still..I would have just left the thing out there if I could so I didnt have to crawl out from under the boat. And Nope..I dont want a water proof case.

I like the M9..but sure do miss my Z3. It take some thought on if I would Jump to the Z4 when its out...

You can have recent calls and dialer on the same page by selecting large dial pad on the 3 dots drop down on the top right.

Oh sweet..thanks neo :)

Now if I can just have my text to speech be able to delete its latest recording then im golden.

I have purchased the M9+, in Thailand, where I live, its an official HTC product not a grey import or a Chinese nock off. It has a higher specification that the standard M9, it has a 5.2", 2k screen, the SD card can be up to 2TB, yes that's not a typo, well when they have a 2 Tb SD card. The have 2 versions in Thailand the gun metal gray, and a gold version. 20 MP Back Camera and Front is HTC ultrapixal camera 3,G and 4G. Running Android 5.02, HTC Sense 7.0

Very impressed with its speed, its lightening fast.

The only issue is the screen, the colors are somewhat faded, especially Red which looks more like a purple. When I compare the screen with my M8 you can really see the difference. I am told HTC is aware of the problem, just hope they fix it PDQ, as this spoils an otherwise amazing phone.

If someone can tell me how to post pics I can post a pic of the phone box and the screen problem.

There's an insert image in the toolbar of the of the message. It's a little photo. I think you may have to have 10 posts to post images though.

Well this weekend I used the gps feature and lemme tell ya folks..it gets friggin hot and munches through the battery quickly. It got so hot that I removed the case and did not plug the charger in until I turned off the gps, thinking that I would smoke the thing.

There was another post about whacky signal variations. Im experiencing some of the same deal here.
While at home I can watch it go from 3-4 bars LTE to 2 bars 4G back to 2 bars LTE back to 3 bars 4G etc. This can happen within 10 minutes or hours..doesnt matter. While camping this weekend I was in a better service area ( Metro park gig ) and same thing there too. LTE,4g,lte,4g on and on. In fact there were times I could not seem to load any pages because the pos was switching bands or something. On the way home I lost the gps signal..for 10 minutes.. Come on! 18 miles from Detroit !?? WTF? Not real impressed..just lock on to a signal and keep it there!

Cant disable Facebook for HTC sense ?!

Great speakers for music..speaker phone sucks though.

Yet again I yearned for the water proofing I had with the Z4 while tearing down my campsite. It started drizzling and I had it on the hood of my truck playing some music. So much for that idea. I dont get why when we have the tech to make these phones water proof these premium sets dont have this feature. I guess as long as it can sync facebook and play Madden 2015 and watch LOTR then the other stuff doesnt matter.

More and more Im getting unimpressed with this M9 toy..Xperial Z4 cant get here fast enough..

I doubt the poor signal is your phones fault, but yes, a poor signal will eat the battery and could make the phone get hot if it is constantly searching for a signal and switching between signals. There is the possibility that you got a bad radio in it. If it is the radio's firmware related, a hard reset might fix it.

I'm pretty sure you can just remove Facebook from BlinkFeed, uninstall the app, then reinstall. Don't give permission for BlinkFeed. Go into contacts, uncheck facebook. Should remove it other than the app itself.

Well Fernandez..I locked the sucker into LTE and so far no problems and better battery life. It seemed like it had a hard time choosing between 4 bars of 4g or 3 bars of LTE. Im sure the signal is the phones fault. I have not changed my location habits and there is a difference between this and other phones I have had in the past.

I dont have blinkfeed on..and it did let me disable Facebook itself..just not Facebook for HTC. I dont think its running though ( I checked ).

Iike I said..Ive been getting better battery life after forcing it into LTE only. There are some outlying areas where it says 'unauthorized access' ( or something like that ) when its in LTE only..but Im working and couldnt be bothered with a call or text anyways.

Honestly I dont use GPS often enough to worry about it over heating like that anymore.

Its just coming from another Flagship phone..well I guess Im having nitpicking issues lol. Its a fine device sure..just with some features I could do with and without.

I do understand your nitpicking. There are a couple features from my last phone I wish the M9 had, unfortunately there's no perfect phone.

You can't uninstall the Facebook for HTC Sense app. Trust me I tried. You can only force close it but the system will just restart it again. It is always collecting info in the background. Nothing you can do about it unless you root the phone. It's the only non system app I can't disable, the other Blinkfeed apps you can. One of the many reasons I don't like Facebook and their web tentacles everywhere.

While we are on nitpicking. What happened to the slider in the data usage so I could see what my usage was today and in a particular block. That is gone now. Why?
