First phone with 'next gen' hardware?

So now that we have most of the details for what we can expect this holiday season its time to look into 2012. Although we've seen some new hardware that's about to hit the market, the omap 4460 for example, we've only gotten a taste of possible 'next gen' hardware.

I guess first we need to define what would make new hardware fall into the category of being 'next gen'. To me it's going to be smaller more energy efficient chip sets. Powerful dual core chips are today's norm, throw in some lte and a large high resolution screen and you have the basis for a high profile phone. So what's next?

To me I want to see a phone that has a dual or quad core 28nm chipset with LTE on board paired with a low power, high performing multi-core gpu. Is that too much to ask too soon? I know someones going to tell me that current chips are powerful enough, but they're just not efficient.

Apple made a choice to not launch the iPhone 4 with a high clock speed and without LTE, not because they don't need it, because the 45nm chips are just not efficient enough for it. Word on the street is that apple is in full swing developing a quad core 28nm chip that will most likely have LTE onboard. We may not see this chip any time soon, but I agree with their thought process.

So my questions for you guys are:
Do you think we will see 28nm chips in phones by the end of Q1 2012?
Do you think we will see LTE on chip in phones by the end of Q1 2012?
Do you think we will see quad core CPUs in phones by the end of Q1 2012?
Do you think we will see dual core+ GPUs in phones by the end of Q1 2012?

If no to any of the above, then when?

And a side question, do you think the 32nm Exynos will be competitive for long if it does not support LTE on chip?

Duel is what you do when somebody threatens your honor.

Dual refers to a denomination of two.

A duel core is what is inside of a robot programmed to do combat with a single opponent at a time.

A dual core is what is inside a high end phone.

I know, grammar Nazi. But I see this mistake all the time and it drives me nuts!

Quad cores, whether we like it or not, are a ways away in my opinion. Sure they will be "available" and in a phone or two, but we wont see affordable / battery-worthy, etc devices for a while.

GPU is all about not having to alter apps for it graphically. I think we shall see those in waves, all at once across the board style.

28 nm chips and LTE on chips are closer, end of Q1 early Q2 seems appropriate. We wil see these before quad cores make their appearance

All opinion, of course.

While I'm always interested in the march of technology, I'd prefer to see advancements in battery technology over the break-neck pace of this hardware "arms race". I have to say I'm more interested in the 28nm dual core over the quad core. It should offer a decent battery bump, but ICS will be the first Android OS to be optimized for dual core. Why bother with the other cores at this point? Sure, it's more future proof, but we're talking about phones here. In two years when all the phones are rocking Android 5.0 "Jack Daniels" (my uncle's favorite dessert), are you really going to have the same phone you pick today? At some point, something has to give, and I think the battery department is where the least advancement has been made in YEARS. YMMV,

I would much prefer to see 28nm dual core with on board LTE thus giving us much better battery life.

At this point there is no real reason for a quad core CPU...not suggesting it wont happen as it certainly will but dual core will be more than adequate for any phone coming out in the next year + they just need to make sure the software and everything else play nice.

Most apps aren't using dual cores correctly as it is so I'm hoping more money will be spent in OS/App development than newer hardware.

LTE will be widely available by Q1 I believe and dual core CPU's will become the norm.

I agree that before quads or anymore processing power is added to these phones we need to see a jump in battery technology.
