Flagging emails

How do I flag emails for follow up or as important. Is starring them the same thing?

I don't know, but there is an option to "sort by starred," which presumably puts starred messages at the top.

Outlook accounts seem to allow flagging but yahoo and MSN don't. They only allow starring
