Flashing Confusion

So I try to avoid annoying stupid posts but I'm a little confused. Like I said in my last thread I am torn between a few Roms so I know I will wind up flashing most, if not all of them. Right now the files I have downloaded are Crossbreed, PatientZero, LiquidAOSP, BuglessBeast and the CM9 nightlies.

My confusion comes in with flashing a new rom, I understand how to flash a rom from stock and how to make a back-up, so to flash a new rom do i just treat the old rom the same as stock?

Wipe Cache
Wipe Dalvik
Flash Radios
Flash Rom

Am I missing anything when it comes to flashing a new rom?

Add format /system (under Mounts & storage in CWM), always a good idea. And remove flashing radios.. they remain whatever you have them, they won't change with each ROM flash. Other than that you're good

Thank you very much, good to know that I get to keep my radios even if i re-flash cause the stock service on this is far from perfect lol

On another note, if i wanted to change the particular radios that i have flashed how would i got about that?

No problem. Also if you didn't know... Titanium Backup is a great tool for backing up all your user apps with data, then doing a batch restore once you have flashed a new ROM. Just do NOT restore system data. I personally recommend selecting a batch restore in TiBu, then hitting deselect all, and only checking the ones you really need data restored for, such as games and some utilities. Also not a good idea to restore data to anything which syncs often, such as facebook, etc.

Then you can restore the rest of your user apps without data, it will be much quicker and IMO more reliable than letting the market auto-restore your apps. On the 2nd or 3rd setup screen after booting up a new ROM, I just uncheck the market auto-restore option and let TiBu handle it all. But again, NEVER restore system data. You'll have to set up your accounts and system settings again, but if you try to restore that data with TiBu you are only asking for trouble

Great thread, with all the current radios available.

Download zip > Put on your sd card > flash in CWR. No wipe needed.
It can take a few minutes for the new radios to boot up, so don't get nervous and let is load.

P.S.
Some ROMS do not have Google apps included with them. make sure to read the instructions of the poster.
If you need to install gapps separate, flash them right after you flash the rom, then reboot.

Simply flash like a ROM in CWR.... no need to wipe anything, though usually wiping cache and dalvik is good practice for flashing mods, themes, kernels, radios, etc. Also The CDMA radio always takes a few minutes to flash and will look like its frozen, lol, don't panic, just let it do its thing. Let your radios have some time to settle in (say a day or so) before you start to really judge signal strength/battery life, etc.

That same advice goes for new ROMs, kernels, etc too... don't judge battery life until the system has a good day or 2, or couple power cycles to settle in

Re: formatting system--it's a good idea, but somewhat needless for nightlies IMHO. For major/milestone builds with full wipes though, I think it's useful. 100% necessary? An argument can be made for either side IMHO.

I disagree (respectfully, of course ).. I think its an equally good idea 100% of the time, for new ROMs, nightlies, etc.... It doesn't add any extra work for you, and it helps avoid any "ghosts in the machine" that could be caused from sticking one system in without fully getting rid of the prior one.

EDIT: I'd liken it to wiping cache/dalvik when you flash a new kernel... some devs will say its not necessary, some say to do it... but at the end of the day its quick and easy to do and can't hurt, so better safe than sorry.

No doubt, I've just had a hard time replicating any bugs that can be traced to (1) not doing it, or (2) doing it. The sample size is small (3 roms, 2 days), so take it for what it's worth .

I always format system bc it cant hurt and it doesnt take very long to do.
