I am new to this, successfully rooted my phone and I would like to try different roms, my question is once I flash a new rom, do I have to reinstall all my software and settings or are those kept and automatically reloaded.
Specifically will I have to resetup my launcher and home screens.

Also when I was using visionary for temp root I was able to delete "rm amazonmp3.apk" etc.. but this no longer works with the permanent root

First question: Answer yes but you can use Titanium Backup to restore most of your apps and settings.

Second question: To answer I need to ask a question first. What program are you using to delete apks?

what wont titanium backup actually backup.

i was doing command line deletes with a terminal emulator.

Titanium Backup will backup and restore everything that works with the ROM you are using example some sense material won't restore to an AOSP ROM. The mail apps are different so if you run a backup from a sense ROM on an AOSP ROM your email settings won't restore.

You can use Titanium to delete apks it works fine you can also use root explorer that is what I use it has more options. For me its Titanium for restore and root explorer for everything else.

is root explorer much better than titanuim backup for all other things. dont mind spending money but don't want to spend more than i have to.

I use it allot but I do allot of file moving and re arranging so it just depends on what you want to do. Start with Titanium and see how much stuff you run in to that you need root explorer for that will help you decide. Bottom line there are things you can do with root explorer you cant do with anything else at that point it just depends on what you want to do.

thanks for all your help. I have one more question about titanium backup. when you long press you get options, how is this erase different from the uninstall on a short press.

adam

A long press removes the apk from the ROM so the program won't be reloaded after a hard reset. this can cause problems if you chose to receive an OTA update. But don't accept any OTAs if you do you will lose root access it could take a while to get it back. Best thing to do if you won't to get rid of the apks is to move them to a folder on your SD card JIC you need them later.

Since I have your attention can i ask a few more questions.

by changing roms can i always hard reset back to stock or once I flash out the stock rom going back requires restoring my rom manager backup?

is there any real difference between nand backup and the rom manager backup and are both direct copies and should return everything to its previous state.

I know these are noobies but searching the forums often leads to big circles with no distinct answers.

1) No-Yes or you can flash a rooted stock ROM

2) No they are identical and yes they will both restore to the previous point

3) never never apologize for asking questions answering questions is what we do here so ask away.
