I have a soon to be 14 year old and he is in need of a phone. I have a note 20 5g lying around the house and I was planning on giving him that for his birthday. Now AT&t is pretty much accepting a trade in for it and will make the flip free. Would you trade the note 20 in for a 14 year old and give him the flip?

I know that means being tied to att for 2 years but I'm in with that.

No way. I have a 14 year old daughter and she is constantly dropping her phone. Give him the Note and you take the ZFlip

Ok, while every kid may be different... every teen, (including my just turned 20 yr old son), that I know are "Phone Destructo-Matics."

My son only gets my "hand me downs," (admittedly all prior flagships), every couple of years.

He completely wrecks them... the screens always end up so scratched and cracked it's absurd... and HIS dime if he wants it fixed... which he never does... shocker, I know, lol.

No way, no how, would I ever recommend giving a kid, especially one that young, a $1k+ phone.

But it's your money, lol.

What if it doesn't cost you anything?

I personally still wouldn't do it, but that's with my kid and my general recommendation.

Plus, IMHO, there's the "spoil effect." Yes, I give my son a flagship phone, but it's always at least 2 years old.

Frankly, he hasn't wanted a "new" phone since he got my old S9+ a few years ago, lol.

I just don't think it's a good idea to give a kid, especially one that young, a $1k+ bday gift.

I know you said it's free, but it's still a thousand dollar phone.

But, again, that's my opinion, nor would I ever... unsolicited... offer another parent advice, but you asked, lol.

The repair cost on the flip will be really high compared to the Note 20.

I know he has taken care of his 7+ but isn't he advertising to other people that he is worth beating up and robbing?

I would worry about him being a target with such expensive phones at that age. Of course if all the other kids have $1000 phones then maybe that isn't an issue. I wouldn't do it in the UK. Kids are getting stabbed for much less.

I got my 11 year old nephew a refurbished pixel 3a for £104 to take to school for safety reasons. He was delighted with it.

But each to their own

Also he is ok switching from iOS to Android? I know in the friend circle without iMessage it might be hard. Just get his input as well if he wants to switch platform first

I didn't think about the robbing part even though we are in a decent area.

I guess it just seems wasteful to not get it when it's free with a trade in. I don't think that I will ever be able to get 1000 for the regular Note 20 again. I would keep it as a second phone to my fold but I'm Verizon. The rest of the family is att.

I'm not worried about him breaking it because he knows that he is stuck with it despite the condition. This is the only phone we will get him.

My older two boys got iphone 12s last year because of the great deal att was offering. Trade in their 8s and got the 12s for 5 dollars a month.

They know that if there's no deals no phone.
