For those concerned about Moto 360 battery life

Re: For those concerned about battery life

Based upon my own experience. The G Watch lasted noticeably longer for me, even with screen set to always on.

Isn't that the point of the larger battery? I would hope with 20% more battery you would notice it.

Re: For those concerned about battery life

I think certain watch faces are KILLING the battery on this watch. There's a really nice watch face - speed something or other. Love the way it looks but as soon as I switch to it this morning my battery started draining at an alarming rate. I went back to one of the stock watch faces and now the battery is holding up very, very well again.

It's odd to me that a watch face would kill the battery like that unless you're keeping the screen on (which I'm not). Wonder if it's some sort of bug in the programming for that particular face?

Well let me take the side of Moto/Google here for a moment. Third party watchfaces are technically not supported at this moment. The official APIs have not been released. Any third party watchface on the market right now is simply a workaround. So they should be used with discretion.

I'm using one of the stock watchfaces. Not because of what I said above but simply because I love the way it looks (the one called Simple with some color changing through Moto Connect).

OK - this makes perfect sense then. I guess I naively just started plucking watch faces from the Play Store thinking that they would work just fine. This was probably my issue from day one. I'll stick with the stock faces for now and wait for the more official ones to be released.

Re: For those concerned about battery life

I'm sorry to report initial battery woes. Today is my first full day with the 360, and I took it off the charger from an overnight of about 9 hours on it at about 5:15am. Here's the setup:

  • Connected to the One M8
  • Running the "Dials" watch face
  • Only aftermarket app included is Strava
  • Auto brightness
  • Auto screen off
  • 7 emails, 1 hangout message
First use of the 360 was having it "start strava" by voice. Then a few minutes into the ride I swiped away the notification on the watch, and left it alone for most of the except I checked the time once, and I did notice the screen come on a few other times when I changed hand positions on my bike. The 360 was right near my phone most of the morning except for a few breaks where I walked to the bathroom or to fill my water at work, maybe about 10 minutes of disconnected time. At about 9:45 the watch actually turned itself off and the button was completely non-responsive.

4.5 hours.

I'm hoping it's a battery conditioning issue in that the electronics don't know where max and min are in the amount of voltage the battery is putting out. Also fortunately I brought the charger, so we'll see if it cycles again entirely or if it improves gradually over a few cycles like the M8 did. I'm not ready to give up on it as such an elegant device, but the jury is still out at this point.

That watchface also killed battery on my g watch. I'm sure at least part of the reason is it has a smooth second hand animation rather than animating once per second.

Re: For those concerned about battery life

Follow up FYI, it took an even 90 minutes to fully recharge.

I love the watch overall however, I don't know if I got a faulty unit or what but I took my watch off the charger with 100% on the battery at 12:30pm today and it's only 1:45pm and it's already on 68% with out even using it! I knew the battery isn't that good but it should last longer than what I'm getting... something isn't right. Any suggestions?

That's about my experience too, I'm going to give it a few days before I decide my next steps. The little charger isn't too tough to carry around, so we'll see.

Battery lasted me 10 hours today with medium usage, but since my car has an imbedded Qi charger I'm not worry about battery life.

Sorry, I failed to mention the software version or build number:

  • Software Version: 4.4W
  • Build Number: KKW22
And now I mention it because I do have a software update waiting for the 360 to be recharged, hopefully that will get me to a better battery state, so I thought I should document versions of the watch software.

New version numbers:

Software vesion: 4.4W.1
Build number: KGW42N

Have to wait for tomorrow to see if that improves the battery life situation, but my plan is to follow the same routine.

Yet another full day in the bag. Today was a hectic day today with quite a lot of notifications and many voice commands. My phone currently has 14% battery and that includes a quick half hour recharge mid-day. My Moto 360 has 52% left and it's been on my wrist since 8:30 AM (currently 11:23 PM).

Note 3 (tmo)
I switch between stock faces all the time, so no telling there.
First day trying it with always on mode.
Auto brightness on.

530am to 821pm 8% left. So, almost 15 hours with screen always on.

30ish emails, some google searches, some random notifications and checking the time.

Gonna try leaving always on for a few days. I think i like it.

Edit: on the charger at 2% just now.
5:30am to 9:56pm. Almost 16.5 hours with screen always on.

I've disabled the heartrate and step tracking, as I don't wear a watch when working out, and the data I get from my jawbone is currently still more robust.

Yesterday, I went from 7AM - 10PM and still had 47% left on the battery...best day so far.

Usage I would say was normal:
Approximately 50+ emails read, 20+ hangout messages with a few voice responses, multiple card pop-ups, and a voice dial.

The battery life seemed slightly better than the day before when I had the health stuff enabled, and ended up with approx 30% remaining. Will see how it goes today.

I thought heart rate tracking couldn't be turned off?

I think you're right. What I did was set it to not save fitness data. I'm not sure how that affects the automatic heart rate sensor. But my battery life does seem marginally better than the day before where it was storing fitness data.

I had 15 hours yesterday (was at 17% when I threw it on the charger). That was my first, full day with it too (got it Wed and played, then back to work yesterday). Currently sitting at 50%, and been off the charger since 6:00 AM ET.
