For those interested in a official 2.3 sprint upgrade for opt s

Re: For those interested in a official 2.3 sprint upgrade for opt

Just for everyone: LG has been contacted directly and they will be releasing the source for gingerbread for our phones soon. :) Hope I didn't spill the beans. :p

I'm not sure how confident I am in this now either. I know ath3nos made the ingenious move of contacting LG and asking for the source, which they said they would soon provide. However, I'm beginning to think the person who replied to that request isn't really any more informed than the dimwits over at Sprint Customer Care.

The source is generally released after the update is made available to the public, right?

I think there is some hope. Especially since gingerbread is already out for our sister phone the optimus one. ;)

I could be almost positive we'll get the update sometime in August. What with the huge amount of Optimus devices sold on each carrier with near Vanilla builds, I'm sure it won't be too hard to get it to us.

Re: For those interested in a official 2.3 sprint upgrade for opt

Not to beat a 7-page-old dead horse, but I followed ath3nos' lead, and inquired into the GB source code with LG myself. I received the exact same answer he did (go to his post on page 5 if you want to see it), but what may be more helpful here was the exact request I made:

Due to the release of the Gingerbread source code for models of the LG Optimus One in Romania and Russia, I am assuming a Gingerbread update will be coming soon to this phone, the Optimus S, on Sprint, in the United States. Will that update be released soon, and, if so, when will the source be released? Thank you.

As you can see, I tried to keep the question as GB/Sprint/Optimus specific as possible so there wouldn't be any confusion. Hopefully this means it'll be here soon, but I guess we truly won't know until something drops.:p

I asked about GB source for our phone a month ago as well and was told then that they did not expect to have a release.

I want this new release sooooooo baaaaddd. I'm sure a lot of people in this forum feel the way I do. Even if we have a version of 2.3, it's just not the same as the LEGIT 2.3. Does that make sense? Haha...maybe if I have time I could be active in ROM development with 2.3

Re: For those interested in a official 2.3 sprint upgrade for opt

My personal opinion is I don't care if its official or not. I don't want to be at the mercy of LG waiting on something that may or may not ever come. But the more important thing to me, and again this is just my opinion, is my phone lol. Right now I have good battery life, more memory than I know what to do with and free hotspot. Now if my browser or mms didn't work then I'd say roms are like bootleg movies and nothing beats the real "official" thing. But my phone works and works well and I have the features of 2.3. I just think some people are over estimating this release. That's why when I started this thread I started with "for those interested ..." lol because I'm not. I wanted it in may, realized LG was dangling a carrot on a stick in my face and got rooted thx to the genius and generosity of Jondevere. I DO remember what it was like to he stock and I hope you guys get it. Don't give up like I did. But I'm happy with my optimus and the unofficial 2.3. Also developers put a lot of time, sweat and headaches into these roms. And I for one am greatful. Its like tricking out a Honda lol.

Very interesting. Gotta be thinking at least some sort of update will drop in August.

This phone is a piece of ****. regret getting it in the first place, even if they gave me gingerbread, i would still hate it. went into sprint store to address some issues, like youtube playback errors, deleting and adding widgets on its own, volume rocker bugs, and an update that says" file is missing" and the update icon will not go away. there was another customer in there with the same problems. i was told to check forums for solutions by the sales person.

Most of the sales reps don't know their head from their butt when it comes to technical stuff to be honest, they are just sales people. You need phone techs, call Sprint and ask to talk to tech support. Also the SD card that comes with the phone sucks replace it with a class 4 or above card and I bet alot of your issues go away.

Re: For those interested in a official 2.3 sprint upgrade for opt

if they could do upgrades at Sprint stores that would be awesome, but to be honest, i'm completely fine and kinda prefer the CM7 ports like ath3nos' rom.

Well with the 2.3 update they may be able to use some drivers and stuff from it to fix various bugs.

Also don't try to get it flashed at the store with a custom recovery - even if the rep wants to help, I don't think they can flash it without the stock recovery.

Sounds like you need a custom ROM.

but I can say the youtube errors happen across devices. I have a brand new EVO 3G, which replaced biotch and that just stops playing video on its own. And the funny th ing is its newer than the version in the market! But yeah, had that happen multiple Androids. As far as the other issues you are having, those seem pretty uniq to your device. I have never had those issues.

Re: For those interested in a official 2.3 sprint upgrade for opt

Some additional news on this front courtesy of our good friends at AT&T. According to this story on the front page, Big Blue has announced that all of their Android phones released in 2011 will receive an update to Gingerbread.

Now, you may think, as I shrewdly did, "well, the Optimus One was first released in 2010, then came to AT&T in the form of the LG Phoenix in 2011, so maybe they're excluding it." Apparently, that's not the case.

Customers who purchased an Android smartphone from AT&T introduced in 2011 can expect to receive an update to Android 2.3. All of these devices are planned to be upgraded from Android 2.2 to Android 2.3, also referred to as Gingerbread. In addition, Samsung Captivate™ owners will be able to upgrade to Gingerbread . . .

The AT&T smartphones planned for a Gingerbread update are:

HTC Inspire™ 4G
LG Phoenix™
Motorola ATRIX™ 4G
Pantech Crossover™
Samsung Captivate™ 4G
Samsung Infuse™ 4G

If the Phoenix gets the update, you can bet your bottom dollar our Opti S' will.

Re: For those interested in a official 2.3 sprint upgrade for opt

The Phoenix is an AT&T phone, the Optimus S is a Sprint phone. Although I do not doubt that the Optimus S will get a Gingerbread update, the two carriers have very different update/upgrade schedules. To say the Optimus S will get it because the Phoenix is getting it is quite the logical fallacy.

I'm probably using the word "fallacy" incorrectly. Don't judge me, I ain't no english major :p

I know it's a heavy assumption, but I feel it carries a substantial amount of weight considering the circumstances. The Phoenix is basically an afterthought of a phone on AT&T, whereas our phone is one of Sprint's top-sellers. I'm just saying that if its cousin on AT&T, or any other American carrier for that matter, is slated to receive the update, I can't imagine it wouldn't reach us.

Touch?. I accidentally deleted my post. Grrr.

But you do have a good point. Optimus S > Phoenix IMO

Indeed Optimus S > Phoenix.

Logic says If Phoenix gets upgrade then Optimus S should also, IF Sprint > ATT on upgrading software. That i'm not so sure.

Re: For those interested in a official 2.3 sprint upgrade for opt

So, with all of the hoopla, has anyone actually gone in and checked this rumor?

Note to self - read the full thread before posting...
