For those who want the second GB update/patch

I did a factory reset a couple of days ago along with the 4.08 update. I noticed everything seems to be snappier. Even 3G and wifi connections are definitely faster. I also noticed even the camera is a lot faster than before. It feels like I have a brand new phone! I was thinking of upgrading my phone because of all the issues, but now i'm definitely keeping my incredible for a while.

well after going through the whole clear cache method I finally got the update to load and work. However, I'm still stuck on the old Android Market! Any ideas on how to get the new one? Or should I just wait since they're pushing the music update?

This forum has made me a happy man! Everything suggested here got my second update (4.08) installed on the first try. Go here:

Second GB Update/Patch Won't Reboot Issue - SOLVED!

After you perform those steps, then follow the instructions at the beginning of this post. Setting my clock back a year (Option 3) worked for me.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO FACTORY RESET / HARD RESET / MASTER RESET YOUR PHONE!!!

In fact, that was the solution from the Verizon Rep who called me back. "Just Master Reset your phone", she says. I say, "I don't want to reinstall my 100 apps again." :) Maybe Verizon just doesn't want you digging around in these HBOOT menus. Forget that!

For the "not enough space" issue, you need to remember that it doesn't have anything to do with the MB/GB numbers you see on the physical drive OR the memory. It has everything to do with the 150MB partition the phone has for DATA and/or CACHE. I haven't found an app that shows me that breakdown yet. Look at how much DATA Google+ or Google Music uses. If it is over 5MB, that is a lot! All these apps chip away at that 150MB. I removed all of the apps that were taking around 1MB of DATA space and the update went through perfectly.

Thanks again Android Central posters....and Google for putting these links at the top of the search!

that's exacty it, the recovery menu is not meant to be accessed by end users, only by trained techs.... not that any of us nerds has let that stop us ;)

[ method I ] Check for updates

1. From the Home screen, Press Menu key.
2. Tap Settings and scroll down the screen
3. Tap About Phone and tap System software updates
4. On the System software update screen, tap Check now.
5. If any software update message shows up, please follow the on-screen instruction.

[ method II ] Reconnecting to the Google server.

1. Open up your phone's dialer.
2. Key in *#*#2432546#*#*
3. If any software update message shows up, please follow the on-screen instruction

[ method III ] Force phone to check for update.

Please manually change the date on your phone to one year from today. This will trigger an automatic check in with the update servers and you will get the appropriate update.

1. Menu > Settings > Date and Time
2. Un-check Automatic to prevent the date and time from automatically updating
3. Change the date to one year from today (under Set Date)
4. Go back to the main settings and select About Phone > Check For Update and follow the prompts

Option 3 just worked for me. If they really have stopped pushing the update time may be of the essence before they actually pull the file. Good luck!

UPDATE: I am now running 4.08.605.2 ... Market says Verizon and screen size is back to 3.7"

FYI: This list is modified from [Update x3: It's Back!] HTC Droid Incredible Gingerbread Update Rolling Out, Again

I tried all of this, and only the 3rd option kind of worked. I tried countless times to set the date 1 year forward, but the phone always figured out it wasnt 2012, and setting it back a year didnt force anything. Finally I tried to change the month and day, I set it to Dec 30 and sure enough the update was downloading right away.

The only issue I am now having is that I am just looking at a screen that says 'Rebooting now...' except it hasnt rebooted. The screen has timed out twice and the phone is still waiting to reboot.

Dec 30 is the only thing that stayed for me...but did not trigger any updating at all. Even using *#*#checkin#*#*. Ah well..

Theoretically any date change ahead should trigger the update, not sure why it does not work for you. Worked first time for me.

I was having the same issue...the update was stalled at the reboot screen. I did the following and it worked perfectly.

Clear borked upload from cache

1.Boot into recovery
?Press and hold Power, Choose ?Restart? option
?When screen turns off, press and hold Volume Down and Power

2.When the white HBOOT screen appears, use the volume button to move down to ?RECOVERY.?

3.Press the Power button to select ?RECOVERY.?

4.When the triangle and exclamation appears, hold the Volume Up and Power button at the same time.

5.Using the volume button, scroll down to ?Wipe cache partition? and select it.

6.Select ?Reboot system now?

You can now wait for the update to show up again or you can follow steps below to force an update check:

Manually change the date on your phone to one year from today. This will trigger an automatic check in with the update servers and you will get the appropriate update.

1. Menu > Settings > Date and Time

2. Un-check Automatic to prevent the date and time from automatically updating

3. Change the date to one year from today (under Set Date)

4. Uncheck Background data from settings menu under Accounts & Sync (don?t really know if it makes a difference, but I did it anyway)

4. Go back to the main settings and select About Phone > Check For Update and follow the prompts (I had to do this about three or four times.) It went MUCH smoother over

Thanks! Doing method 3 and then method 2 right after worked for me. I just aded a month to the date instead of a year. My phone would automatically roll the date back if i did a year.

I've done pretty much everything that has been listed and my phone still gets stuck on the rebooting for the 4.08 update. It did work to finally get me the 4.06 update though.

And of course, as soon I hit enter, the freaking phone restarts. I guess it was the hefty drop down onto the desk.

I swear I did the steps listed in post #108 124324235 times.

EDIT #2: Finally restarted to a damn not enough memory error again!!!! I have 587 MB free on the damn phone. Im literally down to the little 1-2 MB apps that are unable to be deleted.

Advise?

Bingo, this worked for me. Thanks for posting, sorry to hear it's not working for others.

Two things (which were mentioned already but worth repeating):

1) It's not phone storage, it's cache. Clear the cache, as instructed in other threads. I can't post the link (I don't have enough posts). Google "Second GB Update/Patch Won't Reboot" to find it. Here's the link: Second GB Update/Patch Won't Reboot

2) To get my phone to pick up the 2nd update, I had to do method III and then quickly do method II. My date/time change wouldn't stick if I changed the year (kept resetting back, even though I turned off automatic updates). I set the date/time ahead to 12/30/2011, and then quickly do the *#*#2432546#*#* and it found the update. The update rebooted the phone a few times, and took maybe 10 minutes.

My phone hasn't updated at all. I am still on 2.2  i have tried everything to download the gb update (87.7mb) I have force pushed it like 10 times and it wont stick. i feel like all of you have gingerbread at least right? Am i the only one who is still stuck in froyo? HEEELLLPP!!!

I followed the directions from the original post, methods 1, 2, 3 wouldn't work, and date change wouldn't stick even after turning off "Automatic" for date and time settings. So I put the phone in "airplane" mode, set the date ahead 1 year as instructed, then rebooted the phone, once the phone booted up, I turned off airplane mode and then went to the About Phone and System software updates page and the update was beginning to download already. I don't know what to suggest for the memory issues, the memory management on the Incredible is incredibly poor.
Hope some of this helps...

"Second GB Update/Patch Won't Reboot Issue - SOLVED!" Following this, see post #103, and then doing my little airplane mode work around, I was able to get the update to download and reboot.
Thanks to everyone!

Thanks ridemoab,

I tried everything listed in the forums attempting to solve this problem. I tried everything absolutely methodically multiple times over the course of 3 days with no success.

Airplane Mode seems to have made the difference for me. To reiterate my success for those with a very stubborn case of this flaw, the key steps to my recovery were;

1)Use the recovery menu to wipe the cache as documented in the "Second GB Update/Patch Won't Reboot Issue - SOLVED!" thread. This seems to solve the issue of insufficent space.

2)Follow ridemoab's instructions in post #113 of this thread by setting the phone to Airplane Mode, changing the date, rebooting the phone, and then turning Airplane Mode off. The update started and completed successfully! Finally.

Thanks Forum!.....No thanks to HTC or Verizon!

I did everything as stated in the beginning of the forum and have like 555mb on my phone. I take it that isnt enough because everytime i try to reboot it just sits there and sits there and sits there.... any suggestions guys?:-X

I finally got everything working. => Mosaic, I had a similar amount of space left and everything failed for me too... finally got it to just over 560mb and it worked!

Thanks to ridemoab for the airplane mode trick! That made all the difference in the world.

I wound up going through the process twice. The first time went all the way through the reboot/recovery screen (black screen with the green arrow graphic) after downloading the update and rebooting... then came back to my home screen and told me it didn't have enough space. Got ticked off, uninstalled apps, cleared more data and cache and tried again - success!

Verizon now shows in market, screen size listed as 3.7, and most importantly... VOICE SEARCH F**KIN WORKS!!!! Plus, overall, it feels like it's generally responding faster, but that could just be perception.

Thanks for all the help!

After making space (clearing data, moving apps to SD, and clearing caches) I kept trying to change the date/time and unchecked the Auto button but had not noticed that the date changed back anyway about 2-3 secs later. Took the back off the phone and went through the whole procedure and then changed the date and quickly pulled the battery before it could change back. Reloaded the batt and when it started up it found the update and installed it successfully. Has this update solved the phone storage issue? Showing full when actually not? Thanks again for the help.:)

Airplane mode on ==> change date ==> reboot ==> airplane mode off ==> check for updates = solves non updating issue. Great find guys. thanks!

Ok. After ignoring the updates prompts for months, finally gave in to update the software, only to have failed, so I came here researching for a solution - I finally got it to update.

I read this forum and noticed so many people having all sorts of trouble with their Droid and I actually had every single problem that was listed here, so I felt obligated to my fellow Droid users to share this information.

My issues/problems:
- Getting prompts for updating software - tried updating, but nothing happens (Was still on the 4.06... version)
- Found the post: http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-droid-incredible/134246-second-gb-update-patch-wont-reboot-issue-solved.html - did it, but still did not update.
- Found this current post, did method III but it states that my phone did not have enough storage space.
- Tried method III again, the Rebooting screen took over 10 mins.
- Tried method III again, got the screen with: OK Cancel OK (And nothing happens)

So here's what I did:

1) Uninstalled a few apps from my phone - preferably the big ones.

2) Follow the steps from this forum: http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-droid-incredible/134246-second-gb-update-patch-wont-reboot-issue-solved.html

3) Once its booted up, follow method III - ONLY CHANGE: set the Year Date to last year's and not the year ahead. i.e: 2011 instead of 2013.

Then Voila! Finally got it updated to friggin' version 4.08.......

Important: Step 2 is a must before step 3. - And do it right away.
I hope this helps!

I realize I'm late in the game, but for anyone else like me who had tried various suggested steps over the past few months (except the FDR), post #116 worked, but only once I cleared enough apps to reach that "magic" 560MB free space in the app listing.
