Forums Maintenance September 8th & 9th

noticed that the "My Threads" pages seems to have every thread that you commented on, not just the threads that you started (which I think is how it's intended).

There was a syntax error in my search query... Sorry about that.

Thanks Cory.

Is it possible to make the search results on the "My Post" page look like the search results on the "My Threads" page? The way the "My Post" results show up now, they aren't very useful, because I can't tell what posts have new replies.

There isn't, which is the same as it was before. All these search queries/results are just shortcuts to what you would normally need to do manually via the search page. The only 2 ways to see if a thread has a new reply is to click the subscribed threads button, or the my threads button, both of which will return a list of threads that will be bolded if there are new replies. I thought a long time ago that these queries would be useful, so I created links, to make the search a one step process.

I could probably do something to alert you if you are quoted, but I would need to code that, and it wouldn't be up, tested, and running until this weekend, if I can even accomplish it :)

Am I misunderstanding what you're asking for?

I think you understand. I'm just looking for an easy way to see if I thread that I participated in has new replies. I think the "My Posts" and "My Threads" queries are really useful and I'm glad that you created them.

The old version of the "My Posts" query showed the subject line for the thread which was bolded if there were new replies and the subject line of your reply which was never bolded. It would be the first place I went when I logged on to look at the threads that I had already participated in. If it's easy to accomplish something similar, then cool. But it sounds more complex than that, so it's not a big deal. It sounds like I can accomplish the same thing by automatically subscribing.

I hope I don't sound like a complainer. I really like the updates. The forums look great. And I appreciate your and everyone else's hard work.

I can't replicate the post time problem. What version of IE are you using?

IE 7 (only because I don't want to update my perfectly behaving Vista sp1 to sp2---required for IE upgrades)

Vista, yikes. At work, our support of IE7 is dwindling. You may run better if you can find a way to upgrade to Win7. Just saying....

Yo, I use three desktops and a laptop in my studio; one of the desktops is Windows 7 which I like but rarely use! My most-used is a smoooooth-running, fast Vista sp1 of which the sole disadvantage is the cranky, limited IE7. I use Chrome most of the time although for timesaving reasons the IE7 remains my default browser.

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but when inserting a link, it used to be that the text would be highlighted, so that the user could simply hit delete and type what they wanted the viewer to click. Now that text isn't highlighted, so the user has to highlight the text manually and insert the wanted caption. I'll upload a picture if this is unclear.

Still having major issues. Mobil site will not load. Took forever just to get here and type this.

There were some optimizations performed on the mobile site this week. It should be better, but we are still working on the layout/design piece of it. Is it better now?

I'm sorry, but a screenshot would be great.

Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but where did the "Thread Author" label go? It was very helpful to see that on subsequent posts by the OP. Any chance it's still in the works or able to bring it back? Thanks! :)

It's on the list of things to add back in. Just looking for a good home for it.

Okay - I believe I know what you are talking about now, and no the root cause of why it's not showing up. I removed the highlighted section below, because 95% of the time it just repeats itself all the way down the post. It creates a lot of wasted space, so we tried removing it to clean it up. A side affect of that is that it doesn't show this information in the search results either & I'm not sure it's worth the trade off putting it back.

Glad to know that I wasn't going crazy. :)

I think the search results are a lot more useful with the titles and read/unread bolding included. But I agree that they are pretty useless within the thread and just waste space. It's a shame they are connected.

My vote would to be to add them back in for the benefit of the search results. But I'll defer to the mods and admins (or whoever makes these decisions).

Jean,

I'll see what I can do about it. I'm sure I can write a conditional statement that is based on the page being viewed.

Cory

P.S. I was so excited to have an opportunity to use the tabbed post feature that I wrote for the Advisers :)

More feedback...

On the "My Threads" page, at the bottom, it shows the number of results, e.g. "Results 1 to 44 of 47", but there's no button to go to page 2 to see results 45 to 47. I assume this is a oversight.

Alright, I'll upload a screenshot as soon as I get home.

This is what I see. The page number is a hyperlink. Are you not seeing the links?

What's missing is a border.

Hopefully this helps. Basically, when you post a link (say I post a link to google.com), there are two fields: The first is where the link leads to, the second is what the user clicks on. The second field used to be highlighted and the cursor was moved to this highlighted field so that the poster could simply start typing what they wanted the link to beChanges to AC2.png

Edit: Noticed a reason for the "Post Merged" feature. A new member posted three times in a row that the DL link, but the posts got merged. Thumbs up for the addition!

Glad you like it :)

So, I went back to our vB3 forums and noticed that if I used Firefox or IE - both of which are the only browsers that support WYSIWYG - that I could replicate the desired behavior. I then returned back to vB4, went to my settings page, and changed my editor type to default to WYSWIG.

Previously, there was a toggle button in the editor that allowed you to switch back and forth, but the default was WYSIWYG, regardless of how your settings are configured.

So, have you been using either of these browsers, and if you change your settings per what I stated above, does it give you the desired result?

FYI: WYSIWYG is short for "what you see is what you get"

For those of you who have expressed frustration over our mobile forums site, preferred the previous format, and asked for a darker theme - I put together a BETA mobile version yesterday.

I'm not satisfied with the color contrast on the posts pages, and will tweak them further.

There will also be the standard white theme as well.

There are no guarantees the dark theme will stay unless an overwhelming number of members express interest in it.

And like I mentioned earlier, the Android Central App is probably the best choice if you're looking for a feature and high performance mobile experience. The AC app is available for download in the Google Play store, and is free of charge.

The BETA I referred to is accessible (only) by scrolling to the bottom of the page, and selecting the mobile BETA option from the style chooser. It (BETA) is also only available for registered members.

I have fixed this.

Awesome. I see the new subject lines in the "My Posts" search. But I'm not seeing any way to tell if there are unread replies or not. They all appear to be bold.

At the bottom left of your screenshot, there is a message saying that it had completed, but with errors. Can you tell me what the errors are?

I'm not sure. I didn't notice that at the time so I didn't look at them. I just went back to the page to try to recreate the "Done with errors" but this time I didn't get any errors. Still no next page link. :( Updated screenshot below.
